Service before end of lease?
Discussion
Hi guys
I have a BMW 420 GC that is scheduled to go back in the first week of March after a two year 8k p.a lease.
The car states a service is due in 4100miles 02/2022. Now I only have 2000 miles left of my lease so the mileage is not a concern however I'd like to avoid a service.
This was my first lease car so my question therefore is to avoid the service would I have to return the car in January or would returning the car anytime in Feb avoid me having to have the car serviced?
TIA

You will need to check as some lease companies are more strict than others.
With that wording I think you would ok if you’re within the manufacturer guidelines (e.g. must be serviced within 1000 miles or 30 days of when it was due). However some will charge if car display is showing ‘service due’ when returned.

You are very very unlikely to avoid having at least one service done on a two year lease without an early handback.
Its usually best to just get the service done at some point in the last six months or so - then at least you get the 'benefit' (if only psychological) of driving the serviced car that you have paid for.

Ive had 3 lease deals and each time have completed annual service 1 & 2 (3 year lease).
For the 2nd year service I usually try and delay getting this done by a month, then when its complete I get another month on the other end. Generally hand it back a month early to avoid service / MOT. No issues thus far.

The service indicator can be reset on BMW's, might be worth ago and could add a couple of months on to it.
Quick google comes up with this:

How much would the charge be to return the car early. If it's more than £200 then surely it's easier to get the car serviced, assuming it's only oil/filter change.
My thoughts exactly, I've never quite understood the advice to hand the car back early to avoid paying for a service and MOT.I assume if you hand back early you still have to pay the last month's lease, and you are then without a car you've paid for anyway, or have to start the next lease early (so paying double that month)?
To save a couple of hundred on a service and £50 on an MOT?

No, if your car is Audi, VW etc you would pay around half of the monthly cost to terminate early (maybe they are a bit more generous than other funders). So my Arteon will cost £100 to send it back a month early. If that gets me out of paying £300 for the second service and and MOT at £50 then I am £250 up and also don't have the hassle of arranging the serviceI assume if you hand back early you still have to pay the last month's lease, and you are then without a car you've paid for anyway, or have to start the next lease early (so paying double that month)?

I've had several lease cars and always just hand the car back a month early rather than service it.
Generally (obviously need to check you contract), the cost to terminate early is 50% of the remaining payments. Work out how much you'll be due to hand back early vs the cost of the service.
In the case of the Volvo V90 I had, you're damn right I was paying the £99 to hand back a month early over the £450 second service!

I had a Mini Countryman through Alphabet Finance (who I believe do quite a large amount of leasing for BMW) and I was in a similar position....I was told that to end early, I would be expected to pay 100% of remaining rentals......and that if the vehicle was collected with a service overdue indicator, the car would not be collected and I would be liable for the service cost and the increased cost of collection by trailer.
The biggest gripe I had was that the 'first' service on a 2.0 Mini Countryman was £340.......which itself was significantly more than my monthly rental. Comparatively, the first services on my Golf mk7 before that was only £185
(Before you ask, both main dealer pricing, and Alphabet contractually obliged me to use a franchised BMW garage). I would imagine that if your 420 is a petrol, it is the same engine as my mini had, and hence the service cost may be significantly higher than the £200 being mentioned in this thread....
In the end, I bit the bullet and got it serviced, just to save the hassle/worry, but yeah, quite annoying / expensive, particularly considering as I had covered only 14k miles of my 20k allowance, and the service indicator would have 'allowed' a further 5k miles of driving.....not to mention the fact that the service indicator had been set a month early at the factory, hence wanting me to service even sooner than I had to in reality.

I've always serviced a bit later for the 1st service then handed back either on time or slightly before, my last lease a 5008 I extended for another 12 months so did the same with the second service, when BCA came it was showing "service in 3 weeks or 9,500 miles" he said as long as it wasn't overdue then its not an issue, it only had 2 days before it needed an MOT too.

Most of the German stuff is on a 2 year service interval, hence no such luck delaying an initial service....jonwm said:

When we had company cars it was a condition of the lease that they had to be MOT'd before they went back. Was always a faff and usually done in a panic as there was never a reminder. I had one fail too - nothing wrong with it, just the main dealer MOT tester being daft about a tyre.Gassing Station | Car Buying | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
