Would I be mad to consider this as a family estate?

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202111029...

I am considering the usual suspects (E350, A6 Avant 3.0 tdi etc) but this looks interesting:

Facelift, great spec, straight 6 (300+ hp), 4x4 and, as an import from a potentially sunnier place, potentially in better condition than a comparable UK car.

The usual suspects almost select themselves these days!

If you fancy something different then why not? (Although I don't know anything about them)!

As an owner of one, I’d say you’d be mad not to.

I have a P2 XC70 D5 and it is a lovely daily. T6 will be likewise, but fast.

I looked into these before I bought a Jag XJ (I know…), and one issue that was frequently mentioned was the Geartronic auto lunching itself. I don’t know what to do about it, but maybe delve further in that regard.

A lot of car for the money though.

I think these may be interesting and perhaps less susceptible to ‘bork’ than the German counterparts?

I had an F11 535d Touring, which was great, but I was always waiting for an injector / turbo / something else issue and also there were a number of other niggles (headlights etc) so I lost faith.

My £3000 Lexus GS 300 commuter feels like it will last forever so perhaps a Volvo is similar.

You can change the fluid, DIY is doable

Any ideas how bad they are on fuel on a long motorway run?

I am very used to 25 - 35 mpg so hoping in that ball park?

Also - I have a 2010 car. Fantastic barge, nice and comfy - won't set the world on fire handling wise, but amazing load luggers and perfect for family duties.

I have the D5, but would swap for the petrol in a heartbeat!

Another D5 owner here. They're brilliant practical all-round cars. Ours gets some pretty hard use - regularly carting rubble to farms, some off-road stuff and transporting two young children who don't appreciate a nice tan leather interior as much as they should. It holds up to it very well and in the two years and 35,000 miles we've had it not a single thing has gone wrong, not even a bulb, and it doesn't show any sign of doing so. I wouldn't go for the petrol personally - I had a 3.0 Outback (petrol) previously and with my mileage mid-high 20s mpg was annoying, especially as the performance wasn't mind blowing. But if I was doing half the miles then yeah, a T6 XC70 would be great.

Does what it says on the tin. Pinnacle of practical motoring, Antichrist of sexy motoring!

Loads of room, mine (albeit older) has been reliable.

Mine is more shed territory, but, it also means I really don’t care about little chips and dings. It’s actually a very stress free motoring experience in that respect.

Aha. On having read the advert properly… Jap import.

I’m sure lots and lots of people will offer some counterbalance, but, I only had bad mojo when I got an import from Japan.

I was taken aback by the fact the Speedo is usually in kph instead of mph - it’s either work to get it swapped, or less fussy people put a sticker over the dial, which looks rubbish and wouldn’t work with digital displays.

Also, expect ZERO service history. Either it will be in Japanese, or, you’ll get nothing at all.

I’m sure it works out well for a lot of people, but my personal experience is that I’d never do it again.

Great car, but the specifics turn me off personally

Is there not also a thing with Japanese market radios not working well in Europe? Something to do with a different range of frequencies so you only get a handful of stations, if I remember..

Interesting stuff.

The general consensus is that an XC70 T6 is a good idea but the Japanese import bit may be an issue.

It is a pain trying to find an estate with a bit of performance, space and comfort that is not diesel.

It may be that I have to go back to the devil’s pump!
