Looking for a diesel automatic hatchback. 100 miles every day drive. Can spend upto £2500. Something that could be cheaper to fix than a bmw or rare old cars.
Heated seats if possible...

I think only diesel cars can give more than 40 mpg in any condition.

Kia Ceed or Hyundai i30 might be good shouts. I believe the MK1 of each came with torque converter boxes.

You'll have to stretch the budget as well as haggle but I've ticked all the boxes & added a Cruise Control Panoramic Roof as well as the heated seats, it's the CLC220cdi, these cars are bulletproof with Seat Leon running costs:

No Pan Roof or heated seats but less miles:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202008212...

C Coupe older version of the CLC above:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202108156...

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202107175...

The cars above were built for your usage & they're running costs are sensible, like all autos you should make sure the gearbox fluid & filters have been changed (in the case of the Mercedes every 40k) haggle around £300 off if there are no receipts showing it's been done. That applies to all autos.

Thank you. I thought it might be 100 bhp boring car only. Like the above Hyundai 1.6 i30. But then can a Mercedes be reliable and cheap? Isn't MB the other side of BMW coin?
Is this CLC220cdi reliable than a 320d or vw 2.0 tdi?

The 2.1d is well proven in the reliability stakes, the engine has been around for decades & unlike the BMW diesel it won't be doing chains/swirl flaps etc.

Parts are sensible in terms of cost, yes it's very much the other side of the 320d coin.

You'll struggle to find anything with heated seats that's in good condition spending only £2500

You can have this leggy Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCI that looks like it has had a hard life towing stuff (who knows what), it does have an MOT until March though
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202103109...

Or this leggy BMW 120d SE - look at it this way, if it has managed 155,000 miles already, it must be a good one, right?
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202109157...

Or this leggy and rather unloved VW Golf GT 2.0 TDI DSG - poor bodywork, looks like the rear wiper motor has given up the ghost, I'd immediately get the oil changed on the 'box, which could cost a fortune if it were to go wrong. As it's a mk5 Golf, it probably also leaks water into the cabin when it rains

If you decide you don't need heated seats, you'll be able to get something better

Unfortunately with the way prices have been going, £2500 is the new £1000-£1500 shed range.

It is not good for people who frequent the "Joy of running an old shed" thread as the great cars for little money seem incredibly thin on the ground now.

100 miles per day sounds like a good candidate for a Mondeo 2.0 TDCi to me. I believe the Powershift auto box in these is the wet clutch version, which is apparently more reliable than the one in Focii. Assuming there is evidence of servicing!

Titanium X spec gets the heated (and cooled) seats and is generally an excellent, relaxing place to be to trundle back and forth 100miles a day. £2.5k won't get a facelift Mk4.5 If you could find another £1k you would be.

I guess an Insignia 2.0CDti auto would be worth considering too?

Doesn't the oil pump seal on this fail causing the engine to lose oil pressure and kill itself? Ten hours labour to replace the seal?

At what price can I buy a ulez compliant diesel car with cruise control and heated seats?

It would need to be a Euro VI which I believe means it requires Ad Blue. I would personally avoid these cars as it is highly likely it is going to go wrong in a very expensive way and wipe out any fuel savings compared to a petrol.

Not every Euro6 diesel needs adblue & of those that do there are loads that have racked up big miles with adblue.

It's not just about buying the cheapest, you'll want something with lowish miles because you'll be racking up over 2k a month.

All out of my current budget. If it's impossible then something non ulez. What else to do ... Saw some cars with 200k miles. Is it strict no go zone?
