Even all

I'm in the market for a workhorse for general duties and lugging stuff to the tip, dealing with the daughters horse etc. etc.

I've found what I think fits the bill in the form of a White Volvo v60 R Design, 1.6D with "DRIVEe", which if my googling is good means that it's turbo charged, supercharged AND does dome sort of energy recovery?

It has a tow bar and in this trim has decent seats and decent audio albeit no carplay etc. but that I can live with.

Anyone ever owned one and can give some pointers?

Edit, it's a 2012 plate if that matter.

In the real world the 2.0d is the better package.

I would look for the 2.0 D3 (5 cylinder) mate, just bought one myself a 2013 in R Design, it's a much nicer engine and a definite workhorse, and still only £30 tax, and it sounds really good aswell being the 5 pot.

I dismissed the 1.6d as it was far too sluggish when fully laden, the V60 is nearly a 2 tonne car remember.

DriveE just means it's got stop/start for emissions

Definitely go for the D3.

I ran one up to 145k miles doing 120 miles a day and it was ideal for that job.

Ride will be affected by the R Design wheels, mine was standard and very comfortable.
Not the most inspiring drive but seats were excellent, spec ok with bluetooth, decent climate/heater, cruise, auto wipers/lights.

£30 tax and easy 50 mpg

Only got rid because we were up to 4 cars and WFH meant I just didn't use it.

Indeed. I had the basic 1.6d V60 and it was no more economical than the previous 2.4 D5 S60 I had.

You had to drive the smaller engined car harder to make progress whereas the D5 could just waft along on its torque.

Thanks all. I think the message is clear and that's the 1.6 will drive me insane.

I'm now shifting to maybe looking to an S80 D5, but for what I'm looking for within a price (£6k ish) they are all mega milage.

I'm not bothered about high miles as I buy on condition but is 128k just asking for trouble?

Just run in!

A well looked after D5 will easily take the miles and 200k on regular servicing is perfectly possible. Only weak spot is belts. Just make sure they’re done and if they haven’t, they’re one of the easier engines to replace them on. Not too expensive either. (Just avoid Volvo dealer prices - ouch!)

If Auto, make sure it’s had a fluid change at that mileage if it’s got the old 6 speed box. If the gearbox ‘clunks’ from D to R or vice versa then run. Volvo can do adaptations to it which may, and I stress may, help but will not ultimately solve and then it’s a £3k fix or a replacement box at £££££.

Just getting rid of my V60 D5 and it was a great car and supremely reliable (bar one cracked wheel. Grrrrr).

I recently purchased a 2013 V60 D4 with 152k on it. Other than it needed a new clutch (I knew about prior to purchase) I'd have no idea it had done that many miles. The engine sounds perfect and everything still feels tight and fresh. Assuming correct servicing (mine was FVSH) I'd be very happy with 128k miles. Buy on condition and history over mileage.

Good luck

If it was my money, 2.0 every time. Peugeot HDi unit, and far more reliable than the 1.6 (and in a big car like that and my Mondeo, I bet in the real world there's only a gnat's whisker in fuel economy in them as the power/torque seems much better suited - they did the 1.6 in the Mondeo from 2011, the ECOnetic one, and the 2.0 is smoother, costs the same to tax and has less to go wrong.

Volvo also did a 2.0 (5 cylinder) full Volvo engine in 2010-2014 - basically a detuned 2.4 with one turbo -lovely less stressed unit over the 4cylinders

Haven't come across one of those, sounds like a good shout. Did they go back to the HDi unit after that? Every Volvo I come across here nowadays is the 1.6 as people are obsessed with cheap road tax

V60 D5 with sensible miles, but you'll have to stretch the budget & haggle:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202105072...

ULEZ/CAZ compliant D4 180bhp is still a decent amount of power:

If saloons are on the table you'll get a nice D3 S60:

Also at your price point you can get a nice Infiniti M 30TD which are also ULEZ/CAZ compliant are loaded with spec & reliable:

My D5 is on 196k… it still runs sweet as a nut. Don’t be put off by by a high mileage 5 pot as long as it’s been looked after.

Also, my FiL has recently purchased an S80 D4. 2016 model with the 180bhp 4 pot. I took it for a spin - very impressed! My D5 is a 183bhp manual. His is obvs a 180bhp auto. Cracking drive, his felt more eager and more responsive. Lacking everso slightly in low down torque over mine, but perfectly good. His D4 is £30 pa tax.

TLDR - In my opinion, the 4 pot D4 is a cracking engine.

I'm thinking i need to up the budget a little. say £7k.

Is a D4 convertible a bad idea? I seem to be drawn to it like a moth to the flame!

I had a V60 D5 (2011) for 3 years and 45,000 miles.

Apart from a fuel pump that gave up and a fuel contents sender that had a mind of it`s own the car was reliable. The D5 is a nice unit with a bit of personality.

I miss it to be honest and I`ve started the search for an XC70 to replace my Octavia Scout.

I've sat down and had a word with myself and the convertible idea is gone.

Now I'm looking at a V60 D1. Which is only the 1.6 but not as large a car to haul around. R design trim too which is nice but I think I'll regret not having that 5 pot.

D5 would be pick for me - some nice mapping available too if its the 5 pot version - the latter d4 is meant to be a decent engine tho, but I like a quirky engine.

Had 4 maybe 5 d5s in various guises (V70/S60).

Not sure what its like now but they did throw up the odd nasty

No. From 2014 they used their own newly developed VEA 4pot. The Ford/psa engines were dumped as quick as they could after Ford sold to Geely.
