Other half needs a car for 8 months. I'm not relishing the prospect of buying and selling a car within such a short space of time. What would be the least hassle approach to this?

I'm thinking that mark up times two from a dealer, might push costs into rental territory. Are there any viable rental options available for an 8 month lease? I remember there was an EV monthly lease company, which would be ideal, but I suspect supply isn't very reliable and waiting lists a pain?

Otherwise I'm looking at something small like an i20 or a fiesta. Would it make more sense to buy older or newer, for minimum private selling hassle?

Europcar quote "from" £400 a month, so rather pricey for eight months. I assume other car rentals are similar.

Short term leases seem to come out similar, eg £390 https://www.flexxilease.co.uk/car-leasing/toyota/y...

The problem is, anything involving taking a new car off the lot, driving it for eight months and giving it back is going to involve spending a lot to cover depreciation.

Not the easiest but the cheapest is to buy a secondhand car privately and sell it privately, could lose very little if you're lucky.

One approach might be to buy something like a Jazz, that way the buyers and sellers you have to deal with are likely to be a bit less hassle on average ;-)

Buy a leaner friendly car I.e 53bhp VW UP, Fiat 500 etc for around £5k
Sell super quick privately.

In 8 months of ownership I think you would be unlucky to drop more than £500

Saying that prices are bit high at the moment, and one set of tyres, clutch service etc and you might have been better with long term rental.

PS the EV subscription company you were thinking of was called evezy but the had a name change to ionto

I'd buy, say, an old Civic for a grand or two. Doubt you'll lose much when you sell it.

For least hassle it has got to be a rental.

For example, how about a Toyota Aygo for £14.21 per day including tax and insurance etc:
