What would you do?

Hi all

unfortunately the audi a3 1.9 tdi 2009 my work horse has given up and the clutch has gone.

I've had quite expensive quotes all over £700, including the dual fly mass wheel to be done. The cars done 158k miles and has been very reliable but given the cost of repairs and MOT due i'm not sure whether its worth spending the money on a vehicle which is likely only worth £1200 anyway. Perhaps time to count my losses.

Several options

1. Get the audi repaired and carry on using it
2. Get the audi repaired, sell it and buy something else
2. scrap the audi and buy something up to 15k
3. lease up to 300 a month
4. PCP deal of some kind similar to the above

I probably do around 15k miles a year so need something fairly economical. I quite fancy something nice, comfortable and reliable. It seems I've given myself too many options and finding it particularly hard to decide which way to go with it!

Has anyone had a similar experience or any friendly advice?

If i opt for a new vehicle would be keen to hear any suggestions

My preference is

Hatchback or SUV
2017 onwards preferably
Ideally Auto

I went for the second one "2. scrap the audi and buy something up to 15k" when my 09 330i needed new rear wheel bearings late last year. A complete pita to replace apparently with lots to potentially go wrong so I WBAC'd it and bought an Octavia vRS. Was definitely the right decision for me

Sell the A3 as "spares/repairs", buy something else.

Although it's arguably worth keeping as it's a known quantity, if you're not jn a position to do the repair yourself, and you have the budget to get something much newer, I'd move on.

You need to do some man-maths. Jamjar will get you £450 for your car with a knackered clutch, or £1000 if fixed. Since it’s going to cost you £700 to repair it, you might as well take the lower offer and get shot of it.

How well looked after is the Audi? if you're going to get another year or two out of it after the clutch is done i'd keep it. Wait till used car prices settle a bit as they're crazy at the moment

If you are doing 15k miles a year, you need something reliable. What you do with the Audi is just a financial calculation. So the sell and repair, or just sell is the first decision. You may find a garage that will replace the clutch and make an offer on it.

+1 to this. If it is otherwise functioning (aircon working, radio working would be my priorities!) I would ride it out until used car prices come down. In the meantime put some of that £15k on the mortgage if it is burning a hole in your pocket. You'll never regret that. Appreciate this is quite a boring suggestion for PH!

Sell the Audi as Spares & Repairs & then get yourself something nice for me there are four standout picks because you'll want low mileage/good spec/reliable/decent power & a good age.

I don't think £800 for a complete clutch kit inc flywheel is bad, its a good 5-6 hours if you do it right and the parts will be £300-400,

Personally i'd fix it, you can have a working car for the price of 2 monthly payments.
