Fiesta Ecoboost gone 4 years without a service
Discussion
Hi,
I'm looking at a 2017 Ecoboost 140 which has only done 11k miles but never had a service until it recently got to the car dealer...I know they are 12k miles per year service intervals or every year if under that...does it sound like a bad idea to even consider it? I know the small engines are quite reliant on good oil.
Should I just walk away? I'm struggling to find the perfect car despite regular Ecoboosts being everywhere, and I would like the 140.
Thanks.

Most servicing intervals these days are X years OR X thousand miles so irrespective of the low miles, it should have been serviced at the X years mark, usually 2 years.
In terms of long term longevity, its unlikely to make a difference on a car with that amount of miles but it may make it harder to sell in future. If you are questioning it, most other buyers will too and you are limiting your target audience straight away

Has it definitely had no servicing or is it just the service record is lost?
If its the former, I'd walk away and look for another one. 4 years of low mileage is likely to be lots of stop start town driving with short journey and car often not getting chance to warm up properly. All not conducive to long engine life if the oil hasn't been regularly replaced.
Maybe ask the dealer which it is, if it's just been lost maybe the local Ford dealer could check their records for you?

Walk away
Thanks guys.
The car has never been serviced according to the seller.
I think I just wanted someone to confirm the right move!!
I'm going to leave it.
My wife thinks I'm being too picky but the amount of cars I've looked at with ditch finders, which puts me off.
Ironically for similar money I could get an ST in the colour I'm after so much easier (white) but despite living in a nice neighbourhood I think I'd worry about it getting stolen as the garage has my 205 in it!

Your missus is right! I wouldn’t worry about it if it’s in nice condition. If it had been sitting in a dealer showroom for the same period, would you still be worried? Treat it to a full service when you get it and it’ll be fine.
These engines are not know as eco-boom without good reason!I would run a mile from this personally.
Cars clearly been neglected if the owner hasn't bothered servicing for 4 whole years and the low mileage actually makes it worse as short runs from cold will have caused more wear. Brake fluid and filters including fuel and pollen will be the original so not good.
Can't actuslly believe anyone would even consider it unless dirt cheap.

If it had done average mileage (say 60k) without a service, I’d agree with you. However it’s been doing nothing and it’s only been driven 11k miles. Also, the problems were on very early cars between 2011-2013, related to overheating. I’d much rather buy with my eyes and brain, using common sense and fact. I would run a mile from this personally.

And don’t forget to check the grease in the trunnions. Can't actuslly believe anyone would even consider it unless dirt cheap.

How’s life in the 1950s?

The only service item I would be concerned about would be the lack of oil and filter change. Can't actuslly believe anyone would even consider it unless dirt cheap.

Fuel filter will likely be the major service at 4 years or so which would be about now based on it being 4 years old.
Pollen filter could probably do with a change but hardly essential.
Brake fluid? Yeah, maybe but at 11k miles is likely got plenty of life left. Changing brake fluid wasn't even a regular thing when I first started driving, don't think I bothered on most of my cars until I stepped up to the newer cars.
In reality, if the car is 4 years old then its just missed its minor service at 2 years which would probably be the oil & filter plus pollen filter and possibly the brake fluid at year 3, assuming it has the major done now.

You do realise that normal Ford intervals were 12.5k/12 months so should have had 4 services by now?Fuel filter will likely be the major service at 4 years or so which would be about now based on it being 4 years old.

I’d run, don’t get hung up on the 140 from what I’ve read unless you are wringing it you don’t get much more in the real world than a 125 - and if you really want it get a 125 and remap it’s to 140-145bhp
