In a few weeks I’ll probably be selling my Renault Megane GT tourer. It’s a 67 plate 205 TCe (1.6 turbo, DCT paddle gearbox).
Although by no means “niche”, as a warm flappy paddle petrol estate it’s relatively unusual. Renault Sport heritage, alcantara and up to date tech adds to the appeal.

Anyway the point is which car buying service do you think would work best?
Only 160 of these (tourers) were registered in the UK and when they come to the market they tend to sell quickly. But it’s not a car on many peoples’ radar or one people tend to go looking for. There’s currently only one on Autotrader (private).

Mine is freshly serviced, new MOT and 4 months manufacturer warranty remaining. I’m erring away from a private sale. I’ll happily sell an enthusiast car privately but not so sure with this one.

So given it’s rarity and perhaps narrow appeal, but mass market credentials, which car buying service would be best? I’m assuming one where a Renault dealer might pick it up?

I used Motorway recently and I’d highly recommend them. They were superb and very proactive to deal with. Even after the deal was agreed and I was liaising with the buying dealer directly, they remained in contact to ensure everything was proceeding as expected.

The selling process is easy, just be honest with damage, wheel kerbing, and anything else you may spot and be critical of when buying a car. It’s best to be honest up-front to avoid hassle later.

I will likely be going through the process with Motorway again soon with the Mrs’ car to capitalise on current increasing prices.

I've used Motorway twice now. Both times my car was sold for over 1K more than wbac offered. They collect for free as well

Best offer I've had so far is from Money4YourMotors. Firm £18,500 after supplying photos. They collect, so no messing about with appointments and visits. Chap said payment by "faster payment" after transport company sees the car, but before taking it away.

We Buy Any Car's starting offer was £18,000 - as long as the car is in "showroom condition".

I used wizzle, couldn’t fault it. I was honest with the condition of my car and got £1700 more than the WBAC valuation of the car (that’s before adding any imperfections). Got paid straight away without having to pay a premium unlike WBAC

I've used Jamjar (same sort of thing as wizzle) before and was very easy and straightforward.

Couple of mates have used Evans Halshaw and again straightforward (same process as WBAC)

I'm struggling with Motorway right now, absolutely useless communications. Maybe they're just inundated right now but my experience says "avoid".

Thanks all. WBAC gives me an acceptable starting point but I’m grateful for the endorsements of the other two. I think at the end of a the day a dealer who knows what it is and knows they can sell it well will probably give me more and do well out of it themselves.

Apologies if I'm stating the obvious, but have you tried calling local Renault dealers?

A couple of years ago I sold my 2015 facelift RenaultSport Megane 265 to a Renault dealer. Money4yourmotors offered me around £17,000 (at the time) for it, came out did all the checks, the guy said he couldn't pick out anything of fault. Spoke to his boss and there had been an 'error' with the valuation and they would happily offer me £13,000. Was not a happy bunny, told them to go waste somebody else's time. I phoned a couple of Renault dealers and one needed a RenaultSport model in stock, agreed from memory around £16,800 for it, took it down and they gave it the once-over. 10 mins later the dealer said they were all happy and transferred the money right away, really pleasant experience. Might be worth a go touting to Renault dealers, especially at the moment with demand outstripping supply.

I wouldn't touch wbac again.

The lad seemed focused on 3 small paint chips (not even paint into the plastic) on the front lower valence.

He completely ignored the kerbed alloy and a scratch on the rear.

He wanted 400 off.

Really frustrating experience and me having to pay to receive my money and pay them even though they were buying a fee.

If that reply was to me, it was Motorway themselves.
I did a few days later get an email and since then the process has actually been fine. I've just got to re-do one photo then it will be going out to auction (or whatever they do) so I will try and remember to update the thead

We used Thecarbuyinggroup who we found off wizzle.
Sent them pics and they increased by £500 due to spec, from contact to car going was 3 days.
No haggling, no hassle, collected from my driveway and money in my account before driver took it away.
Would recommend them in a heartbeat.
Get good reviews on trustpilot also.

I haven’t tried the Renault dealers because I’m not yet ready to sell - but good point. Nothing to lose making a few phone calls once I’ve cleaned it!

I ran mine through them - both cars under what others offered including wbac by a fair margin.

Chap who put me onto Motorway sold an 8 series BMW through them.

I sold a V90 cross country and a mate sold his A6 BITD through them.

All made £1-2k more than the alternatives. They are a friendly and helpful bunch as well.

I hope that their operating model is working, because it is a great service to date!

I recommend Motorway too, sold mine for nearly £1k more than WBAC were offering and the buyer collects the car, no nitpicking over stone chips or charging you £75 to send your payment!
