Check everything works, make sure the history matches up get a HPI/VCheck done first check MOT history & check the numbers for possible timing chain issues.

I know this is unoriginal but also consider driving a 330d if budget permits. 6 cylinder + ZF8 = excellent

Assuming this is an early F30 version?

As its an N47 engine, I would have a listen to how it idles and revs because these engines 'can' have timing chain issues, although being a 2012, its less likely to be affected than the older E90 models with the same engine. You can often hear the chain making a noise when idling and even more so when holding the revs at 1500-2000rpm.

Check the iDrive, earlier ones had an issue with the system rebooting and needed a software fix.

Assuming auto, make sure the gearbox is smooth. Should go into drive and reverse with no noises and shift up smoothly.

Make sure the oil changes have all been done on time.

Check the paperwork for any work that has been done.

Do an MOT check here:

https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history

Make sure there are no major issue which caused a fail at the last couple of MOTs.

Visually inspect it. Does it have premium tyres or budget? Tells you a lot about how its been cared for.

Do a HPI check. You would be surprised how many issues crop up on these regarding outstanding finance or mileage discrepancies etc.
