Hi,

Appreciate car prices have gone up. Looking for a car for my mum, £9k to spend. Must be an auto. She likes the saloon shape (currently in a leased Octavia that goes back next month) due to the boot size.

I showed her a Hyundai i40 that she quite likes. Kia ceed prob bit small. Nothing from peugeot. Vauxhall insignia bit dated? Not really looking at the big three German cars just due to repair/upkeep prices (a A4/3 series can throw up some big bills)

What would yo go for that has a big boot and is reliable?

Insignia or Mondeo for a good combination of space, decent value for money, sensible servicing and parts costs. A Passat is probably a decent shout.

Hadn't considered the passat thanks.

Her favourite at the moment is the mazda 6. Are the 2.2l diesels any good?

I know you said you hadn’t considered the German big 3, but the A3 Saloon is a great drive IMO. And being essentially a Golf in drag, they aren’t as costly when things go wrong compared to the class above.

Will she be covering more than say 12,000 miles a year to warrant the purchase of a diesel?

How about this Mazda 3 saloon, it's a really nice example I think:

Get the dealer to give it a new MOT before you buy, and make sure the nails have been removed from the rear tyres!

Older shape, but very low mileage Toyota Avensis, should be super reliable

Newer shape, but higher mileage

Something a bit more fancy, but with that same Toyota reliability, Lexus IS250

If your looking at diesels you've got a good selection but you'll need to check if your mum will fall foul of any upcoming CAZ/ULEZ style zones as 9k isn't a small amount of money.

If it has to be a saloon then here are some options.

I think the Mazda 6 is based on a Mondeo, so... that or that!

id look at an 8th gen Honda accord 2.0 Vtec Auto.

Good ones can be had for around 6k and for that she'll get a comfy quiet & extremely reliable car with plenty of toys (heated leather memory seats, sat nav, auto lights, auto wipers rear camera etc)
