Was considering a mondeo or an insignia, but unsure on the reliability of either, especially the auto box at the higher mileages that my budget can get. Any thoughts or alternatives that i might not have considered please?

Out of the two when it comes to overall VFM the Insignia wins as you can get a lower mileage nicely spec'd newer one vs the Mondeo

With the Insignia I'd suggest you drop the sump & replace the O ring by the Oil pick up pipe, it's not an expensive job but if you want your engine to last then I'd get it done.

The Insignia is not as good a steer but it has a lower borkage potential as it has a conventional auto

Now some are split on my next suggestion, I'd advise an engine flush on anything you buy & cut the service intervals down to 10k.
