Hi all

Another ‘what car’ thread I’m afraid as I’m looking for some inspiration.

I am due to change my wife’s ageing Golf diesel with some a little newer. We need something that can do the family duties but also something that’s suitable for the odd track day. Requirements are:-

Similar size to a Golf
5 doors
Decent sized boot
Something good on track out the box as I don’t intend to modify
FWD/AWD
Budget £18k but would stretch to £20k if needs be

The obvious choice I think is a FK2 Civic Type-R. That ticks all the above but I’ve never ‘wanted’ one and I’m not keen on how it looks.

A Megane 275 Trophy/Cup S would have been ideal but only 3 doors. The latest Megane is over budget at the moment.

I’ve looked at Golf GTi’s. Probably not as good on track but what are the Clubsports like, are they any better.

Is there anything else to consider, i30N etc?

Thanks in advance

Peugeot 308 GTi?

Not sure if it's 3 or 5 door though.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I must admit, I had discounted the 308 GTi as I didn’t think were that good on track with the likes of the CTR & Meganes always being favoured.

I do like the Focus but have driven a Mk3 Focus RS on track and at 6’3”, my head was touching the roof with a helmet on. Couldn’t seem to lower the seat anymore.

The Cupra is a decent hot hatch by all accounts and I had a mk 1 Cupra R back when they were new. As you say though, less accomplished on track.

I still don’t know much about the Golf Clubsports.
