2011 BMW X3 advice needed please
Discussion
Hi everyone! My plan is to buy a BMW X3 from my father in law. It’s a 2011 model with 118,000miles, full service history and well looked after. He owned it from new. He’s offered it to me for £5k which I believe to be a pretty generous discount. I don’t know a lot about cars in general but in the process of learning. I have colleagues with older BMW’s with high mileage saying to go for it but wanted an independent opinion. MOT and service not due until December but wondering if it’s worth getting it looked at? I only do about 3500miles per year so would plan on taking it for fortnightly longer drives (being diesel). Wanting to buy it as a good-sized family car with the view of starting a family. It’s a bit of a step up from my Vauxhall Astra so I’m being a bit cautious.
Thanks for your help!

£5k seems fairly cheap so does sounds like a good deal financially
That mileage is fine on a 2011 diesel, shows it’s done about average mileage for the year. The N57 3.0D lump in the BMW is fairly reliable and people have smashed on the mileage to 200k or more with little issues.
As long as it’s been serviced as per schedule and there is nothing obviously wrong with the car, it’s the same risk as buying any used car. Probably less of a risk as he’s unlikely to be selling you a dud.
Being a BMW, it’s going to cost more to maintain than your Astra though but you can probably offset the savings
Against those costs. Tyres and brakes will be more expensive, servicing will likely be more etc

I don’t see any mention of it being the 30D so could be a 20D which is the N47, in which case it ideally needs an oil change more frequently than the scheduled interval to avoid timing chain issues. So annually rather than every 18-20k.
Otherwise sounds like a good deal.
I must be going mad as I could have sworn I saw it as being the 3.0!Otherwise sounds like a good deal.
