Do not leave the plate on the car, it becomes the new owners property. Decent people would give you it back, scum won’t.

If you do it online now you might just get the V5 back in time

a) remove the plate and wait/hope new log book arrives in time for weekend (seems unlikely)

This.

The log book proves nothing when it comes to ownership, as it says in huge letters on the front. Happened when I sold my last two, I simply stated it was up to them-if they wanted the car they could take it away without the V5 and I'd sort out once it arrives (signing a bill of sale with the relevant times and dates) or pick it up later.

WhenI took one off the other week, I removed the reg online on the Saturday and the V5 arrived the following Friday.

Retain it using the DVLA online system (hurry as it shuts down at 7pm).
New V5 arrives in a week or just under so there is a (slim) chance you will get it for the weekend.

If it was done this way how do they tax it as a new owner ? Don’t they need the v5 or do they still just use the new owner slip?

Until you notify the DVLA of the sale (using the new V5 when it arrives) it is still taxed using the tax you bought-unless the car is sorn'd

You’ll be provided with an online certificate to get the new plates made up. It’s a totally painless experience smile

I seem to remember I took mine off online, whilst I was waiting for the buyers money to clear in my bank.

I can’t see that getting here for Weekend if I did it today unfortunately and it would waste both our time

Best cancel your buyers trip then. Did you not think about this before thinking about selling?

Yes, obviously numerous other factors as to why it wasn’t done earlier which I’m sure you can appreciate, but the car also sold much quicker than anticipated and the timeline stated suits both parties.

I wouldn’t worry, the new purchaser should be happy with a receipt and the old V5, it’ll still be relevant.
