new guy here needs some advice/help
Discussion
HI Guys, been reading the forums for a few weeks now and thought id might have some more luck asking you lot!
So i am going to get my licence very soon not been driving as living with friend who drives, but they are moving out of the country soon and no longer will i be to bum lifts off him to do the activity's we normally do, hiking fishing kayaking etc, so i am just looking about at the moment to get an idea of pricing and insurance cost etc.
My question is can any one recommend a 4x4 that will have the ability to handle the roads in places like the lake district Scottish highlands etc that can carry my equipment that will hopefully be under 1k and that will not cost an arm and a leg to pay for the insurance, not after anything fancy i don't mind wear and tear as long as they run as intended. any advice will be brill!

It's why I suggested a 'stealth 4x4', as it were.
Even on something like 4 wheel drive Suzuki Ignis you'll be looking at around £2k to insure annually for a 17 year old. If you're adamant that it needs to be 4x4 then your choice for £1000 is pretty limited. Hopefully you have someone who can check out cars for you but I'd be going for something small. I suggest the Suzuki Ignis.
Should be reliable:

A bit over budget but I suspect you'd get the price knocked down:

Long MOT and apart from a dint in the door it looks decent enough

If you can put the kayak on a roof rack, a Fiat Panda 4x4 would be a great option, but they are obviously quite small.
A Daihatsu Terios or Suzuki Ignis 4Grip would be slightly larger, while hopefully not getting too bad on insurance costs.
Subaru Justy, perhaps, but they're a bit old now.
I agree you don't specifically need 4WD, as long as you have decent tyres and common sense, but somewhat reasonable ground clearance is handy for farm tracks and the like.
What are those off-roady looking VW Polos? The Dune, isn't it?
