Hi all,

I've been thinking of replacing my old shed for a while now, which is a Saab 9-3 V6.

The poor old thing has done well over the years but I've neglected with it having tatty paintwork and it hasn't really been used since covid kicked off. Annoyingly, just recently, the radio has now packed in and taken with it all warning sounds too, including the indicator 'tick tock' sound...very odd.

Onto replacement - Do I just get another, slightly newer, better shed for a few grand to replace it?

The issue at this price point is you never really know what you're going to get. Especially when looking at more 'Pher' options. I could keep the 9-3 but the RFL costs £500+ which is likely more than the thing is worth, but I do know its faults hehe

I also was looking spending slightly more on an early Mk7 golf, GTI, GTE and R and under 15k you can pick some up, albeit higher mileage. Would any of you touch a mk7 R with 100k? The way things are at the moment at this stage you may as well finance, spend more and go much newer but I want to avoid that if possible.

In fairness, I'll likely move back to London once things have calmed down, having escaped to the country due to covid, so something that will live on the capitals streets is a must.

You may question the need for me needing a car at all, I may get rid of the Saab anyway, however I do like the option and the flexibility so looking for ideas.

I don't really have a criteria although I think a 3/5 door hatchback will be more useful, maybe newer than 2013ish but not that bothered and not something in the highest tax band.

What are the PH thoughts - I appreciate its a terrible time for the buyer?

Keep it and do some maintenance on it?

I've just bought a 9-3 V6 as a "cheapish" car for dogs/daily. Wanted a cheap V6 estate it was this or a 159.

Mk5 Golf gti, good example can be had for around 3.5/4k and they are pretty reliable. Does 80% of what a newer performance Golf will at a fraction of the cost.

At high mileage Id avoid any DSG box as its costly if they break

I always think of this price range as shed no mans land. If something major goes wrong it is too expensive to just weigh it in, but too cheap to want to spend any significant amount of money on it.

For sheds, if you want as little hassle as possible I would always go as simple, mainstream and as new as your budget allows, but how boring is that........

The old adage better the devil you know, always applies in my mind in this scenario.

A replacement radio for the Saab cannot be too much from ebay and easy to install yourself??

The only bugbear is the £500 RFT, but buying a £3 - 4k Golf would equate to 8 years RFT ( assuming zero on a Golf!!!). It could also bring similar borkage fees too.

Thanks all for the inputs

I'll probably keep the Saab for now and keep an eye out for when the market changes for something newer/nicer. At the moment, at least, there doesn't seem a lot out there that doesn't cost the earth.

I've has a look but mine has the first gen radio (button dash) with the ancient nav screen. Its notorious for being a pain in the bum to sort out due to the fiberoptic setup. I think from research its either the head unit itself, or one of two amps that sit behind either the dash or under the passenger seat.

A later car with the double din radio would have been so much easier hehe

The 2.8T is a bloody nice engine, and quick enough with decent mid range pull, even in standard tune. Just the rest of the car failing around it unfortunately

I own a 2013 Mk7 GTI with 66,000miles. Love the car but it does have a few niggles, one of which is a touchscreen that itself goes crazy sometimes.

I drove a Peugeot 308GTI last week and personally found it a far superior car and you’ll get way more for your money.

If you really want a VW I’d suggest a Cupra as they great value for money.

Can’t really go wrong with the Golf but you do pay extra for the badge and a nicer interior.

I'd avoid the Golf, I don't think they are a reliable long term bet at all.

It's going to have to be something Japanese and petrol. Toyota, or posher, Lexus.

Having said all that, I would be tempted to throw £800 at the Saab, and run that for a bit longer. £500 tax would gring my gears, but after that, it's pretty economical.

And I agree with a previous poster. £5k can be no mans land on running a car.
