I've been looking at an S model Audi, test drove it, liked it but when looking at the paperwork realised it has had 4 owners in just 36k which would make me the 5th. The first owner seems to have kept it for 30k odd then a succession of short ownerships, 1 guy appearing to have bought during lockdown and returned it within 14 days reason unclear - could have been too small, could have been on a jolly who knows.

Is this too many owners, would it concern you if looking to buy? Would you hit for more discount or avoid?

We're looking at a car in the 25k region if it helps.

The dealer has been pretty helpful and said we'll a lot of S models have more owners but I'm finding it off putting.

Are you buying AUC from an Audi dealer?

When you say S model you mean an S3/S4/S5?

If you are buying from an Audi dealer I wouldn’t be too worried, they are hardly going to sell you a lemon as you get a warranty anyway.

People seem to chop and change cars far more these days than people used to, we keep ours a year sometimes or 4 years other times.

Only downside is selling it on later, more owners tends to put people off a little.

A £25,000 Audi.

If you try to sell that car in the near future to a dealer most would probably decline it as it'll be too many owners.

If you plan to keep it for many years then it won't matter so much.

Custard OP.
Not me. Haven’t posted in a while and unless I accidentally double posted it no custard required.

This is from an Audi main dealer if it helps

If I base it on physical condition alone, it seems decent but seems to have been on long life servicing 19k and 35k services (why do people do this with sporty cars surely 10k/annual oil change?) and in the back of my head I think if I try to sell it in <20k fit whatever reason it would look a bit suspect or dealers would suck through teeth and offer lowball px.

Trying to see if my thinking on this is old school and more owners is perhaps the norm these days

Because that's what the service schedule says most owners want the minimum maintenance costs

I smell a rat. I once (very naively) bought a 1-series from a BMW franchise dealer which had 2 owners for a 2.5yr old car. The car caused me nothing but pain (multiple blown coil packs, electrical bugs, gearbox malfunction and refusal to start in cold weather).

I'd avoid and run for the hills!!

Yeah that'd be a red flag for me, especially at that price. Try and find another one.

I was the 4th owner of a 3 yr old, 15k miles GT86. Absolutely nothing wrong with it at all. In perfect condition.
I ended up selling it to a WBAC type company 1 yr after I bought it for a reasonable price when the wife got herself pregnant. They didn't question it at all.
Wish I'd kept it looking back.

If buying from a main dealer, you'll get at least a 12 month Audi warranty and you'll get most things fixed under that (I certainly have had a lot done on my A5 under warranty with no quibbles),

If that's the car the OP wants to have then I'd recommend buying it - a bit of a pain if it goes wrong but won't break the bank. If however it's not that special, then I'd hang on for another.

And how does the number of owners determine the life expectancy of a coil pack or a cold start issue or the reliability of a gearbox? I'm intreagued

What warranty is offered? And how long do you intend to keep it?
