I need to replace my Volvo XC90 by Christmas as it’s going back after its two year lease. Having come from an M4 so far I was quite set on the new M3 Competition as its one car that does everything but the deals aren’t coming and the residual is poor so the holding cost is high.

I need 5 seats and a boot where I can get my mountain bike and other sports stuff in but want performance. I have had a 340i before and a 640i but am restricted to 3 litres for work so the RS6 etc is out.

What I am contemplating is getting two cars, a work horse and something nice but one or both must fit the following criteria.

You can split this whichever way but I would prefer to drive the nice car whenever I am not close to home or doing my sports and possibly for work

1 must be less that 6 years old (whichever I drive for work)
1 must have 5 seats for occasional use
1 must get my ebike in so folding seats needed or work horse like a Disco, Navara etc
1 must be 3.0 or below (can’t drive bigger than 3.0 for work)

I am kind of thinking RS4 does all of it but also I find Audis a bit boring. I could get a 5k run around Navara or old Discovery and get a 911 or Cayman GTS or a 520d m sport for work and a toy (probably Porsche) for the weekends. Not sure which way to go.

Do I find one car that does it all or get a work horse and something special I wash more than I drive.

In your situation I would go for a 2017/18 530d/E350d estate at c.£25k and a Cayman S.

Cheers,

Chris

Think I'd be considering ;

F31 330d for £20k

&

R35 GTR for £40k (DBA - 2011 on)
or
Audi R8 V8 (Manual)

40k on a DB9 Volante then 20k on a 2018 or so E Class Estate for the five seats, bike and sub 3l option..

The R8 is a good idea so thanks for that especially if I could an R8 V10 Manual.

My worry is it would be on the drive too much. Another curve ball seeing as though I drive more for work than anything is to switch these ideas around and go nice car in the work and shed at the weekends.

I am thinking

i8 great for work and fuel bills etc, different but quick and looks cool
3 series/5 series for the weekend

A sub 10k 3 series would do the job when I need 5 of us in it or the bike in the back.

Choices, choices.

Much appreciated ZX10.

The fx is a good shout, I am leaning towards switching my decent car for work etc so the i8 fits really well.

Will ponder it this weekend and have a think. The R8 v10 is lovely though.

The i8's are good but get an extended test drive just to be sure, there are some great deals out there on these at the moment:

Test drive the R8 too though just to be sure. wink because at the end of the day you really won't know until you drive them.

I have had an i8 before for a weekend. It works on many levels. I will drive it much more than an r8 as I couldn’t use that for work being a v8/v10. We are restricted to 3.0 max.

The i8 I can so it would make my mileage much more enjoyable than say a 520 or Infiniti fx with an r8 on the drive.

I hadn’t thought of it this way round until today but it makes much more sense for me.

I just need a shed for the weekend, bike trips, tip runs and trip with my daughter and girlfriends two children every now and then. She has a Tiguan anyway so it’s not an issue.I am thinking a discovery 3 for under 10k would work just fine.

I should get what’s best for me Monday to Friday and that’s an i8 as it’s more usable for sure.

I think that puts me back in one car territory really like the m3 but I couldn’t use the m5 for work which would be annoying.

The m5 is a great all rounder though and ticks all the boxes apart from engine size.

I'd get a really nice Evora for £45k'ish and then something as a work-horse, for me it would be an E Class estate or similar.

Am still on the i8 idea but have decided an old Land Rover discovery 3 isn’t the most reliable of things so a x5 might be a better choice.

Take a good look at the Infiniti FX/QX70 they're a very good reliable SUV as is the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

We had a keep grand Cherokee years ago, an overland. It was good but done that.

I will look at Infiniti but pretty sure a pair of BMWs will do the trick.

My last 3 cars have been 340i, 640i and M4 before my xc90 so it’s kind of inevitable.
