2nd car / fun car £20k
Discussion
Looking to get a second car primarily for use as a weekend toy.
We live in the countryside so some great roads but also lots of poor conditions. So something which is fun and engaging on the twisty stuff. Manual would be nice. It won’t be tracked and I’m not interested in modifying.
Should be reliable enough to be used as a second car and to start when you need it to! Maintenance and running costs aren’t a huge concern as it won’t be doing that many miles but for my budget don’t want to only have the choice of something ropey.
Four seats a must as will sometimes need to use it to pick up the kids. Luggage space not that important.
Budget £20k ish. Could stretch to £30k especially if depreciation likely to be lower.
Initially thinking M3 E46 or E92
If you can go to £30k I'd get a higher mileage 997.2 Porsche 911. Might not get a manual at that price, but autotrader shows two within budget. Residuals will be fairly good and post 2009 the second gens got the much more robust DFI engines.
Alternatively, slightly cheaper, a 240i convertible could be nice. A bit smaller than the 4 series but can still carry four on occasion.

My first pick is a bit leftfield but they're a great steer it's the VXR8, for around 20k they're a hard car to beat:

If you don't mind a hot hatch then the 308GTI is a great pick:

£20k would buy you a nice Porsche Cayman 987 gen 1. It's a proper 'fun' car.

Where do the kids sit lol.JM

However in all seriousness, I agree with ZX10R NIN and would choose a C63.
A few more left-field suggestions:

Some good suggestions. Keep 'em coming.
Not too keen on left hookers and I'll be chopped up and dumped in the boot by my wife if it doesn't have four seats of some description.
Budget is £20k "ish" which really means it must be less than £30k and the closer to £20k the better so most of these are in the right range.
if you wanted something a bit different there is always the mustang, easily get a 2.3 in budget and possibly the 5.0L if youre lucky and seems to fit the bill nicely #

I think the e46 M3 is perfect for British country roads both in terms of it's performance and it's dimensions.
E9x m3, C63, RS5, Mustang etc are all just too big, too heavy and too powerful for the majority of the good roads in this country. They're great if you have a real hunger for power and cool noises.

I have to say that if you don't mind going to 25K you can get an M4 & they're good value at that price, you'll get one with 50k or less & you can get a BMW Approved Warranty on them (post inspection) so they're a good pick.
