Dad wants something more comfy but still reasonably rapid as his 64 year old bones get more fragile but his love for fast-ish cars remains. I've suggested he goes for a car a few years old due to the insane depreciation of £75,000 - £100,000 German saloons.
I've come up with (he wants diesel) Audi A8 4.2 TDI, Merc S Class 350 CDI, Merc E Class 350 CDI, Jaguar XJ/XF 3.0D, BMW 740D and as a left field cheap choice, a Honda Legend (yes it's petrol but available immaculate from a mere £5,000).
Which would you go for or is there another logical choice?
Priorities are Comfort, Quiet, Performance, Reliability, Kit in that order.

£15K probably buys quite a lot of Lexus GS or LS.

Do they do diesels?

Doh! I missed that part.

Suspect it ticks every other box though and you mentioned a petrol Legend.

I love my E class, but the S class is better if you don’t need an estate.

I must admit it seems the logical choice. Not fantastically quick as it's pretty heavy but i'm sure the 265 bhp diesel would be enough for him these days. When i eventually want a car in that market i want a cheap 760 V12 Beemer to waft about in. A customer has one and he paid peanuts for it compared to list price, something daft like £75,000 under new price and it runs like new pretty much.
When you are saving that sort of money who cares about mpg?

A lot of people are literally weird with working out priorities though.

Think of all those people who paid more for diesels when diesel was cheap but they'd never make back the price difference with the miles they actually did etc.

People notice £50 v £60 at the pump each week more than they do the cost of the car.

True enough. People pay £45K for, say, a brand new 535D, talk about the 50 mpg on a run and forget about the £200 a week in depreciation going on for years.
My Audi will sometimes return 15 mpg from a tankful but i paid the same price as a new electric Ford Focus, so happy days!

Are the 6 series gran coupes any good? Look like you’d have a choice of 640d’s.

Yeah, the 4 door 6 series looks rather nice, agreed. Decent 313 bhp diesel too, best in class i'd say.

I've owned 4 of those listed (A8, S350, E350, XF 3.0d) & driven the others...

XF and E-class are perfectly comfortable/refined in isolation....until you drive an S-class and to a lesser extent the XJ and 7-series.

My criteria for cars sounds almost exactly as your fathers.

Currently driving the E-class, mainly for the practicality benefits being an estate.

Which would I buy/buy again in this scenario - the S-class no question.

Get him to drive as many as possible back2back and they'll all make more sense in terms of which he prefers.

Happy shopping!

Cheers,

Chris

A Volvo S90 could be a decent option, it looks classy and it’s comfort orientated especially in Inscription spec. Very nice interior as well. I haven’t driven one of these but the Lexus IS300h comes up at that budget, I’ve been in a few other Lexus models and their build quality and comfort is superb. Edit - but they’re not diesel!

If your dad enjoys driving the the XJ is the pick:

The S Class is the tour de force when it comes to spec but it's not as nice a steer as the XJ, these are Euro6 though:

The 640d are nice but the cars above & the & Series are a step above when it comes to luxury.
