Range Rover Sport 3.0 or 4.4 ?
Discussion
I can’t find a thread that lists what to look out for when buying a used Range Rover Sport.
I understand they are very complex cars and that they fall into the marmite category but it’s an itch I have wanted to scratch for 32 of my 54years. Currently on the look out for a RRS in either HSE or Autobiography (preferably as I prefer the seats). Are the 3.0 diesels really that problematic? If so no issues buying SDV8. Budget about £35k.
Thoughts and advice very much appreciated and interested in peoples real world experiences. If 3.0 likely to be franchised dealer buy to get approved warranty.

If it’s a 32 year old itch surely it’s for a proper Range Rover rather than a Range Rover Sport?
Agreed. I’ve driven a L320 RRS and it was a pig. It felt cheap and the 3.0 SDV6 was terribly slow.I liked the driving position and not a lot else. I’d definitely get the full fat Range Rover.

How very droll of you. I care not what others think and actually believe the RRS can portray very different images based on colour. It’s a trick not many cars can pull off. In a nice metallic colour without blacked out windows and a single colour interior it can look IMHO quite classy. Blacked out black cars can look menacing if that’s your thing and white is well .....white. Sorry to see a couple of people being very rude OP - ignore them.
The SDV8 is very well regarded in the FFRR, bags of torque so I'm sure there's a lot more to it than the bhp alone. I would expect economy to be pretty similar as is the case with the FFRR.
On the FFRR topic again though - did you try a V6 model or did it have a V8? The latter comes with the automatically adjusting dynamic suspension which really transforms the handling of the car. This may make you find it a bit more exciting in case you want to reconsider.
Do bear in mind a new RRS is due next year too, not sure if that changes anything for you. JLR vehicles are often better owned on a lease purely from a reliability standpoint.

Thanks shiversaint for your reply. The FFRR I drove was a V6 in Vogue trim so I take your point and appreciate the information regarding SDV8. My best friend has a TDV8 Autobiography Sport Dynamic and the fuel consumption is only maybe 2mpg different. He has been steering me suggesting to get the Dynamic car (Red sport badge) and like you says the TDV8 is the smarter choice. If I only go HSE with the 3.0 I can get a much newer car for my budget and the franchised dealers are very competitive on price which would buy me 12 months peace of mind too.
I can’t find a previous thread on the V6 Crankshaft issues though as I wanted to read up on it. Is it massively common? If so how come so many have survived it? It seems very much like Porsche IMS issues.

Don't know enough about the V6 issue but as you say - plenty of them still about so probably quite similar to the porka IMS thing.
Bear in mind you can take any used RR to a JLR garage for an inspection (which is free), and if it meets their standards you can purchase as JLR warranty. My understanding is they'll give you a list of things to fix if not.
Have a look at High Peak Autos on youtube, he did this with his FFRR. Eyewatering bills though - comes with the territory.

No inn a word the 3.0d isn't as problematic as the internet makes out BUT they have had some issues,I understand they are very complex cars and that they fall into the marmite category but it’s an itch I have wanted to scratch for 32 of my 54years. Given the choice the 4.4d is the pick as it's extra torque & BHP make it a smoother & more relaxed drive than the 3.0d because you don't have to work it hard.
The only proper alternative is the 4.2d Cayenne:

Or if the OP wants a nice SUV & he's decided a Range Rover Sport is for him you tell him which one you think is the best model, whereas if you have nothing to say then you say.......................
By the way if you want an SUV to carry lots of people do you buy a Macan?
Also if you want THE SUV then you get a Jeep Trackhawk/Durango Hellcat.

Earl is the name doesn’t like Range Rovers apparently. Macan is too small. Urus is the price of a house and although I quite like it way beyond my budget. You seem very excited about the term “Fatty man” and I know lots of retired Police officers none of whom have RRs.
I do have quite an eclectic taste in cars, currently a 1955 XK140 FHC, 1967 Vitesse 2.0 Litre, Volvo V90 and a Dacia Duster LPG so generally have a broad knowledge of cars. What I was asking for was advice about the crankshaft issues on V6 Diesel RRS or any other buying guidance.
Anyone know of any useful threads on here?

Mike, the best advice I can offer is pop over to https://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/ and ask your questions there, full of real owners with real world experience, not the dross that always accompanies any thread on here that mentions RR Sports. How about a Land Cruiser?

They hold their money much better than a RR but there is a reason for that. My dads has been almost faultless (You wouldnt get that from a RR)

One Police officers opinion:
"Every Land Rover we have had, has been scrapped or sold well before its time, they spend more time at the dealer than on the road."
As someone who's friend is a mechanic for the police, he rates Discovery above the X5 when it come to reliability but says the BMW is a nicer place to be."Every Land Rover we have had, has been scrapped or sold well before its time, they spend more time at the dealer than on the road."
