My mum is after a new car to replace her ancient Focus which has finally succumb to rust, dead power steering and other bits and pieces which make no sense in fixing.

So, she's after a new car. No bigger than a Focus and she's banging on about a 10k Fiesta but I've told her to save her money (she'll be buying it cash) and get something a little older and much cheaper - about the £4k ballpark. The car is primarily used for her cleaning business so as long as its got a half decent sized boot for a hoover etc she's fine. She has zero interest in cars - they're simply a tool so she'll be happy with some boggo standard thing as long as its big enough and reliable. Now this is the polar opposite to the type of car buying I usually do so I'm kind of open to suggestions. I've seen a few nice looking 10 year old Fiestas etc for what looks like good money with 60>80k miles on them and my parents being long term Ford owners, I think they'd be pretty happy going for something like that.

So, other suggestions? The last thing I want to do is suggest something which ends up being an unreliabel sh*t heap biggrin

I'd be going for a Jazz personally - more practical than a Fiesta with the way the back seat base folds up, seats fold flat etc.

Mum's on her 4th or 5th now I think.

But I doubt a Fiesta would be the wrong choice. Especially if that's the brand she's used to.

Honda Jazz, Kia Venga, Hyundai iX20, Skoda Roomster, all cheap and reliable with plenty of space

Nissan Note too.

We have had ours for nine years or so. Only needed servicing and a new battery last year.

Boring but heartily recommend.

Honda jazz is a great little car, my parents have had them for years.
I'd buy one myself if they did a model with a bit more poke, they are fine for the oldies though!

Let her spend her money & get herself something nice, I'd say get her to look at the Kia Rio First edition:
