Is Autotrader the only option?

Just wondered peoples thoughts, but does anyone feel they have a monopoly on that sector now? I just listed a private advert and it was £48 for two weeks. Judging by the number of cars for sale (I know the trade pay less but they don’t pay that much less, and I know this for a fact) they must be making a hefty sum, even when factoring in running the site. I wonder if anyone sees an opening for a competitor, but I guess I’m not sure what they could offer? Just seems very expensive to me, and I also now think that auto trader is over complicated.

Leaving it on the road is almost impossible these days, tax etc, pissing off the council, insurance.

Yes it is. No-one needs the words "FOR SALE" on that bit of paper in the window. We know it's for sale, it's got a bit of paper in the window!What we need on that bit of paper is the price, large enough to read while driving past.
Then some details and a contact number in a small font underneath.
(I've also knocked up a flag for the aerial, and a banner across the roof before now... but they each just had the price on!)
Edit: car&calssics is free, but has relatively few people looking as far as I can tell.

For what it's worth, I've used all methods on here barring faceache and gumtree'd over the years. Generally I've found an advert in the car / on the drive, good for very low value i.e. £2k or less, Pistonheads good for the more unusual cars, something that an enthusiast will be looking for and Autotrader good for average / mainstream upwards. I just sold an e class on Autotrader in a week, I've always found coverage to be very good. The way I look at it, £48 (I paid about £30 from memory so depends what package you go for I guess) is 1.6% of your asking price. You won't actually find many options with a sales cost that low and penetration so high in my experience.
Members of 10 years or more get free classifieds listings here, so certainly no harm in putting it on PH even if people do typically come here for performance/premium cars.
I've sold a few cheap cars on PH in the past including a Peugeot 306 shed – the buyer didn't want the hassle of sifting through cars elsewhere and assumed I'd taken good care of it as a PHer. Which is the very reason I started buying from PH many moons ago!

Low value (sub £5k), I tend to stick it on Gumtree and Facebook MP first off, have had a couple of sales over the years. They are fine as long as you expect the eejits, chancers and scammers but just avoid responding to them. Worth a shot and its free so nothing to lose.
If I get no interest in a week or two, I tend to punt for Ebay and stick the starting price around what I want as a minimum. Ive sold a couple outside Ebay face to face where they messaged via Ebay and asked to buy privately so I just ended the listing once it was sold.
Last resort is Autotrader for me due to the cost involved but each to their own.

Autotrader has one of the best search interfaces IMHO. It could be a lot better but for identifying cars with features as opposed to make and model (obviously it does that too) it’s better than eBay, FB, Gumtree, exchange and mart, motors.co.uk, carandclassic etc. PH has some very helpful selectable features but doesn’t have the volume.
I think because AT is so relatively usable and accessible for enthusiast and non-enthusiast alike it’s popular with buyers and therefore they have the larger market segment and it appeals to sellers.
