Hey all,

My mother is on the hunt for a new car. As she likes to put her foot down, she doesn't want something with less power than what she is driving now (circa 130-140 BHP).

After much back and forth, I have established that her criteria are:

  • £10-14k budget
  • Not German or Korean (no idea why about the latter)
  • Petrol or petrol-hybrid
  • 5-door hatchback
  • Under 20k miles
  • 140+ BHP
She was really taken with the new Corolla (182 BHP) but it's a few grand out of budget. Instead, she has largely settled on a Honda Civic (FK7 1.5 Turbo with circa 180 BHP). I don't like the looks personally but she does. I've got some concerns about the GDI engine and whether she'll face carbon deposition on the intake valves after a few years.

Is this a problem with Honda direct injection? How is the reliability? Are there any alternatives that she should be considering? She was keen to see this one when dealerships reopen ( https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202103290... ). Cheers
