Vehicle delivery

Evening all.

I am due to pick up my new Land Rover tomorrow, but the dealer seems to have lost it! Apparently it was in a compound at Hull yesterday, has been on a trailer and is now in another compound somewhere. The dealer expected it to arrive today but it didn't, and has not had notification that it will arrive tomorrow. The best they can tell me is basically "let's wait and see if it turns up soon".

I've never bought a brand new car before. Is this normal? To my uncomplicated brain it shouldn't be a difficult matter to keep a track of a car, work out where it is and get it to where it needs to be without losing it. What am I missing?

The cynic in me worries that they have sold it to someone else, and I'm being strung along while they source another one. Could that be true, or is it just hysterical paranoia?

Does anybody know how it works?

It's probably due to be delivered in on a transporter but the dealer may have little control over when that will be within reason obviously. Is the dealer in an obscure location?

They should know exactly where the car is. when it got there, where it came from and where its going next.

Might have been damaged somewhere along the line and they're having it repaired. Give it a good going over before signing for it.

Or they might just not know where it is.

Thanks. No, not a particularly obscure location: Stockton on Tees. I guess I'll just wait and see what happens next week. It's frustrating though!

Is it new or used? Either way do you have a registration number or vin number because that'll ensure that 'your' car is 'yours'. I really wouldn't worry too much, it may be being relayed up on different transporters to make a load up going to the north east.

When I bought a Ford Direct motor a couple of weeks ago all the dealer could tell me is that they are delivered to them within ten working days. This was from a compound in Kent up to the Midlands. As it was I got a call four days later saying your car has turned up this morning and is ready to collect.

It's new, so it doesn't have a VRM and I've no idea what the VIN is. I'm sure you're right; I'm just frustrated because I want my shiny new car.

Here is an example of what dealers have. Or had 4 years ago. They are BSing you, IMHO.
If it was a tiny dealership selling obscure cars like Ssangyong or something I might be a bit more inclined to say they dont have this kind of system but JLR will certainly have something similar. Probably better as all JLR cars (as far as I know) have GPS.

That only shows actual dates in the factory, which is the easy bit - it would be interesting to see it from the port onwards.

Wife ordered a Tiquan that was showing as at Emden, and dealer said it would be 4-6 weeks to get to them. It arrived at the dealership in 8 days.

I think with every new car we've had the exact date has been uncertain and then we've been called to say it's arrived at the dealership and arranged collection a few days later. I don't recall ever setting a firm collection date based on an assumed arrival date.

A friend of mine works for a haulage company. Apparently losing a trailer is quite common and of no real concern. They always turn up eventually, so he says.

Sounds like your dealer is promising it too soon - Disco or Defender I'm guessing...

Below is one I had a month ago (I've deleted the timestamps) - 27th was on a ship, arrived here on the 5th. Shipping compound - distribution compound - local compound - us

Truth is we never know exactly when it will arrive, next one along could be here in 24 hrs from landing, just depends where it fits on the schedule, if there is a space on the next truck going your way etc. Sometimes it will make the ship the day it arrives at the port other times will sit a week waiting.

Thanks for all the replies, very interesting - especially that log, RS MOJO. Did your dealer share that with you?

I spoke with the dealer again yesterday and he said it will "probably" arrive on Monday,so we'll see ...

Just an FYI - Baddesley mentioned above is the JLR National Distribution Centre just west of Atherstone, where you can see the cars stored and lined up ready to go on transporters. Cars are delivered here from the factories, then built up into loads for a dealer or a number of dealers in the same area, or to ports, etc.

I believe dealers can pick up cars from here directly as my LR was collected rather than wait for the transporter delivery in order to get it to me so I could be relieved of my money before the month end.

The system I used would only show despatch from main compound / plant and then delivery to dealer.

If the transport company dispatched it from the main compound on a bulk load and delivered it to another of their compounds to break that load up for final delivery then the manufacturer’s system probably wouldn’t show that. So all the dealer will see is “in transit”.

With what I used to do I had to check the transport companies system to see where the car actually was in terms of the trip e.g. I could see it had left Melbourne to go to a dealer in Brisbane in my system but the transport companies system would show me if it was in the NSW compound or the Brisbane compound waiting for the next leg. The dealers didn’t have access to that system.

There is of course the possibility they sent it to the wrong place by mistake - usually happens when the truck driver doesn’t check the paperwork and just loads a green Discovery.
