Hi Guys -

I'm trying to figure out the 'value difference' between a manufactures warranty, and those offered by dealer as third party add ons (RAC, Warranty Direct, Autoprotect etc.)

I'm looking at £30k-ish three to four year old Land Rovers - many of these are on the cusp of falling out of the main dealer networks.

I've tried to ascertain whether a privatley bought or non-franchise car can retrospectively have an official manufacturer warranty applied to it?

I did this years ago with a five year old 911 i bought, (bought cheap from a random garage, took to a main dealer, had inspection and warranty bought and added)

but it seems that the only way of getting an approved Land Rover warranty on a four year old vehicle is to extent an exiting one?

I called JLR direct and, rather frustratingly, they couldn't really answer!

this one main dealer, warranty - which can be extended

this one nicer spec. but seeminly in the wild west of third part warranties

anyone got any thoughts?

(other than dont by a land rover hehe )

Most (all?) manufacturer extended warranties are not provided by the manufacturer and are still essentially a third party warranty. They might be more comprehensive than a generic 3rd party warranty - but they will still usually have exclusions that the original manufacturer warranty does not, and how good they are does seem to vary between manufacturers.

I've seen enough mixed reviews about Warranty Direct that I don't think I'd rush to buy one. (The other thing you need to be careful with if you go for a generic 3rd party warranty is limits on labour rates).

I know the LR warranty is run by a 3rd party but that would be my choice.
P.S. I have 2 LR products both with extended LR warranties and have claimed very easily with no quibble.

Famous last words! laugh

yeah - i get that - I suppose there is more 'buy-in' from the brand for manufaturers warranty though.

warranty direct shaft you - is boo-hiss warranty direct, wheras a manufacturer has more reputation at stake....

maybe i'm wrong but, thats certainly the perception.

Random aside - are you the Dave K from Rennlist with a white 964? (there can't be that many combos!)

Agreed - I do think the manufacturer extended warranties are generally more comprehensive than a random third party one. (Having said that, I had a fault over the weekend and despite my manufacturer extended warranty generally being very comprehensive - it looks like they'll refuse my claim).

I am indeed - that's going back a bit though! Think I sold the 964 around 2012 (it overlapped with a 996 turbo) - although the only Porsche I own these days is a Cayenne that's almost as old as me!

I can't offer a great deal of advice since I only work for one particular warranty style role where we're pretty easy going. I would absolutely read your terms and conditions front to back and make sure you understand every element of it for whichever one you buy and listen very, very carefully to the sales scripting they use when selling you their warranty. It can make all the difference in a claim situation if it goes to FOS on a dispute.

We get confused with a competitors warranty regularly and had one chap call up and went off on a rant because they'd accused him of putting petrol in his diesel vehicle despite having no evidence. The warranty company sent their own guy out to take a sample of fuel and provide a report which proved beyond any doubt that he had not misfuelled his car. They did find elements of metal filings in the fuel though which ended up being diagnosed as a fuel pump failure. The warranty still refused to pay out because it was a "fuel related problem". He wasn't happy and was even less happy after his 10 minute uninterrupted rant that he'd called the wrong number. No idea what he's doing now but best of luck with him going to FOS if he does.

As above read & listen to the terms & conditions on all of them, going with a Manufacturer's third party warranty usually gets you a more hassle free experience (but not pain free) so if you want the least hassle then go for that.

Yes you can buy private & then add a JLR warranty post inspection & having any work that they find needs doing carried out.
Make sure the car you're buying has a meticulous service history & hasn't run over any of it's service schedules or is at least within their tolerance for this.

You can make third party warranties just as comprehensive as the manufacturer third party ones, sometimes it's the same companies covering the warranty you just have to tick the right boxes or better yet speak to someone.

Discuss the labour rates maximum claim (I always tell my clients to find out the price of a complete engine & put that as their maximum) amounts how long of a period between claims excess etc & you can get a good warranty .

I've seen good & bad from both sides of these warranties, a lot of the time people get caught out because they've bought a cheap warranty that doesn't relate to their car or the cars past gives the warranty company a chance to duck out & of course there are time when they just don't want to payout.

OP... can’t help re warranty but noticed the two cars you’re comparing are of different engines sizes (2.0 SD4 vs 3.0 SDV6). Makes a big difference when comparing price/running costs etc.

Personally I’ve not driven an SD4 but many comments on owners forums suggest it’s a bit under-powered for such a big heavy car. Also, the later SDV6 is considered to be better than the earlier TDV6 - more power and better economy.

I would always go with a manufacturer warranty.

I've heard plenty of horror stories regarding WarrantyWise and other companies.

Manufacturer is just easy, and generally safer, and yes while under written by other companies, is set to a higher standard and often manufacturer supported (IE manufacturer pays a % of the claims).

I think the SDV6 is from '19 only - takes it out of my price bracket, unfortunately

The two i'm now trying to decide between are a Firenze Red 2.0SD (67 plate, low miles from a Merc dealer)

and a 3.0 TD6 from a Land Rover dealer

Both are Lux spec with lots of toys, rear entertainmnet, ambient lighting, side steps etc.

any views or watchouts gladly recieved!

I’ve just bought a 6 month old Fiesta obviously still with the balance of the manufacturer’s warranty.

Looking at the Ford website my understanding is you can only buy an extended factory warranty if you buy from new.

Am I reading this right?

So i've been trying to run quote through this

https://landrover-extendedwarranty-extend-open.mot...

but every vehicle is being me with a "Sorry there are no products that match your vehicle details." message.

despite this being a main dealer services car with 24k miles

Rather annoyingly, also can't seem to find anywhere to call up and find out is this can be done?

Jag dealers?

looks like my local dealer (Guy Salmon in Thames Ditton) has been consumed by the South West London centre

When I was extending my LR warranty it said I must renew before the old one ran out!

Give JLR customer services a call they'll be able to clarify the process.
