Open to any and all ideas. Budget is preferably around the 30k mark but open to any and all suggestions up to around 70k.

Well I will start with - may get your money back in five years for best Lotus Elise you could find for £30,000.

I think we all wish we knew the answer to this question. Over the last 10 years many boats have sailed, but how many are left and which one’s next?

I read that once the pandemic restrictions are over everyone will go out and spend all the money they’ve saved on sports and classic cars and enjoy their new found freedom so the market will rise further. Then I read that economic meltdown is on the horizon and the market will tank.

I think there are some likely good bets - cars that were rated when new, have been through the Gumtree / FB marketplace phase and are just starting to appear on carandclassic. Those are the ones I’d be targeting, mostly 90s and early 00s hatches and coupes.

You can get all analytical looking at who’s now got the money to buy the car they could never afford, what’s about to become importable to the US etc but at the end of the day it’s a gamble.

Buy something you like, that’s nearer its all time low than its all time high and cross your fingers!

I have three cars all increasing in value...
Z3 3.0
e39 M5
RRC softdash LWB

however, each was bought as a car to enjoy and drive, if you want guaranteed investments then you have to buy low mileage and store and choose the right car...!

Or S2 Exige - I've added 10k miles to mine in 3 years and its likely worth £1-2k more than I paid for it - the new platform (hybrids etc) has potential to increase valuers further.

Low mileage fully specced green mk2 Focus RS and stick it in the garage for the next 5 years. Could even put a couple thousand miles on it a year and still make money.

Always hard to pinpoint future investment routes when it comes to cars.

Rare and relatively unique is probably a good bet.

Certainly there have been increases in the value of certain 911's over the years.

As others have mentioned the like of the Elise and Exige are cars that have a rarity and tick the box of being great drivers car, smaller brand, not as many of them and fast becoming something that will one day be obsolete.

Maybe think about something with a larger engine, naturally aspirated - like a v12 - engines like this are rare now and if you can find a car that has one, is a good steer and nicely designed that could very well be a future classic. Maybe something like a Jaguar XJS.

Something like a BMW M3 is a good shout. The e46. Straight Six. Naturally aspirated. Great drive. Again, not something you get these days or will be able to get in the future.

A unique design concept - engine or body wise. Something like the rx7. wankel Rotary engine, great body lines and rare now. Prices are likely to continue going up. Just avoid the modified side of things.

Something like a TVR would be another good shout. Loud, fast, brash, design that is in your face. Cars like that won't exist in the future that aren't all electric and in the six figure range.

On the flip side, some of the first EV cars could possibly be good investments. Look again for design and quirks and that are well received. With EV not really having properly taken off. Something like the little Honda E could be something to gain value in future years.

Brand new wise, the Yaris GR is a good shout. You could likely put some miles on that and keep it and it will likely go up. It has a similar pedigree of cars from the past that have risen and are rising in value - impreza / evo / Audi Quattro / Lancia etc. Its a bespoke design, made and sold at a loss, not many production models. Homologation special. It ticks a fair few boxes that would make it desirable in a decade or so.

Obviously its all risky. But these are the kind of things me and my friends discuss over beers (when we were allowed).

The best VX220 you can find, especially if it's fairly low mileage.

Or the best late '90's Supra?

Yeah, I think my 2005 S2 Exige is around the same price or maybe shade below due to mileage.
Bought in 2007 and I think it has 54,000 on the clock (can't remember as it's so long since I drove it ha ha!)

Imo, buying a Lotus Elise/Exige won't make you a fortune, but it certainly won't lose you a fortune neither

I see the Elise and Exits mentioned, but what about an Evora.

They don't seem to be dropping at all at the moment, unfortunately.

Seems the ultimately driver centric cars are a good bet. Lotus / VX220. And the large engines are also a good shout. Maybe an Aston of some sort...

Carrera T 991.2 2018.

Last of the narrow bodied Carreras.

Sounds great like a 997.1 Carrera and feels a touch analogue too.

Great value package at c£70k. Miss mine.

Other option the 997 GTS especially the very rare manual. Old school Carrera.
