Evoque reliability

We’ve had Honda CRVs for ever, Mrs B, who does earn enough to have a car she wants , would like an Evoque. I’m mildly horrified but it’s her car. Spare me hairdresser quips, unfounded horror stories, are they REALLY that unreliable?

Yes. They're fine on the whole, but have a few niggles due to the complexity of their capability.

The 2.0 diesel is causing real issues with diesel polluting the oil because of the way the dpf regen works.

My old man had the Discovery Sport, after it called for the 3rd oil change in under 10k miles he got shot of it.

I would not touch one of these if she does lots of short journeys.

The Mrs had an early one with the Ford engine for 5 years and was totally reliable.

Mate of mine's had a petrol one since 2014 and it's been perfect.

My wife had one from new for 4 years, the only fault was an occasional low battery warning in the last 6 months.
Comfortable and surprisingly nimble, I was genuinely surprised by how much I liked it.
We did the landrover off-road day you get when you buy one, the Evoque they had went through obstacles that showed an impressive level of ability.

Downsides, well the boot isn’t big, the back seats are a bit tight too but it’s really not a big car.

She replaced it with a discovery sport, a bit bigger and less flashy with much the same feel.

As they say around these parts, it's usually very much a fur coat and nae knickers car. Especially in the 150hp 2WD diesel offering.

That said, if your wife earns enough, now would be a great time to get a good cash deal on one.

A few of my friends have owned RR Sports previously. It never ended well for them in terms of reliability and big bills.

Evoques aren't that unreliable- I assume you are looking used? There isn't that much tech to go wrong. Please avoid a 2wd manual, which do exist. Most Evoques are fking turgid, but as you say it's her car, turn a blind eye.

Also they are super compact. Like a golf, at best.

I agree that the 2wd is likely to be a bit poor, but the bottom of any range generally is.
My wife had the 180bhp 4wd and performance was ample for her use. It certainly didn’t feel lacking unless you were really going for it.

My wife had a 2015 diesel Evoque from new and put IIRC 60k miles on it. I don’t remember there being any problems with it and overall it was a very nice car to drive, very refined and relaxing to cruise in. However the drivetrain was disappointing as the engine was quite rough during acceleration, and the gearbox would hesitate from stationary and sometimes hold on to gears too long making it frustrating to drive at times.

Well, I think that they only offer one model like that, sadly it seems many people order it, because of the aesthetic, I assume.

I wouldn't know the particulars of the range, I purchase from the other end of the Land Rover scale...

But I do know the AWD is surprisingly good on a muddy track, even if the white paint will get dirty.

2wd evoques are relatively uncommon things.

I think they are tainted by reliability issues of their bigger brothers. I bought a new one in June 2019 (P250 petrol) and have done 8000 miles so far and it hasn’t missed a best. It has had a couple of recalls for minor issues but has been quite boring (which is good!)

There'll be a lot of finance deals ending in the next year or so and I suspect that those stats will change in time.

Cars for sale stats are not always representative of new car sales levels.

That said, I could be completely wrong, and when I first saw an Evoque on the road I was very impressed with the styling.

We've got a 66 plate discovery sport with the ingenium diesel engine (2.0) we bought it used and have had zero issues with it, does a 30 mile round trip commute, only extra money I spent on it was on a set of brakes, a service for my peace of mind soon as we bought it and some aesthetic mods (blacking out the exterior - chav I know).

Buy from a reputable dealer that will look after you if you have issues under a warranty period, and as with everything it's better to over service than leave it too long.

People love to hate on LR but my experience with a product of the brand in the past 2.5 years has been fantastic and without a doubt our next big car will be from them (hoping for some serious depreciation on the L405 when they update it).

I’ve always thought they were actually a superbly styled car, there’s a bit of an ‘image’ and it’s good to know that my blinkered approach to their reliability is really a false connection to mates who’ve got RRs and Discos that really do go wrong, a LOT!
My gut is to go for petrol auto, as it will do a fair few short journeys, but happy to take more advice. Looking at about £16k so seem to be 13-15 plate ones in that range
Anyone interested in a completely shagged but still working (just......) ‘02 plate CRV..???

Just don’t get the ingenium diesel model as the DPF doesn’t get hot enough to clear if you do mainly short runs in it. £2500 fix if it goes wrong
