Hi All,

I am looking to sell my cars via Sale or Return, I was wondering what sort of commission is fair for the dealer to take?

I am selling two cars.

Cheers,
Danny

You're the customer.

You set your rate, dealer sets their rate, you negotiate.

Make sure that if the dealer sells it they adhere to THEIR responsibilities as the selling dealer.

Probably worth noting what do YOU need out of the car and what is a realistic price for the vehicle. If you're happy to let one go for say £20k and you clear, but the dealer has it up for £27k then ok, they've made profit but carry the associated warranty risk claims etc and also, they're in it to make money.

There's not 'what is right'. We do this in property. If someone is selling a £5 million house (not uncommon) you don't charge your usual fee, unless you can get away with it.

Dealers that offer sale or return aren't 'doing you a favour'. They're a business. Why shouldn't they make money? Corbyn isn't Prime Minister thankfully so we are still allowed to do this.

sold one of mine on S or R. I knew what I wanted, dealer agreed, anything over that that he made, fair play. I didn't have to deal with the overeads and idiots.

Make sure that you have a written agreement, make sure you retain ownership of the car til the money hits your bank account, WRITTEN AGREEMENT

They normally operate on a fixed fee, last one I sold SOR was £4k (this was a car that required no prep and still had manufacturers warranty), it was a specialist dealer (for that brand).

As said above, select the dealer very carefully, quite a few horror stories of late.

Collecting cars might be a better route, they seem to be achieve good prices.

Yeah, that's it.

O/T, but if you've got time on your hands you may want to check out some of their podcasts done by Chris Harris also.

They have a search option to see what previous cars sold for, if you are looking at selling the M5 listed in your garage, this might give an idea on selling prices.

Also worth sticking the details in Wizzle and we buy any car.

Both offer relatively hassle and risk free selling experience and for the right car on the right day can pay more than a private sale.

Most of all, it will equip you with a few data points on what trade values are.

Depending on what it is you're selling, I found Motorway to actually be really impressive. We sold our M4 through them for £3k more than the trade offered on part-ex and I've just sold my i30N Performance through them (being collected Weds) for £1480 less than I paid for it brand new 16months and 6000 miles ago.

Appreciate that if you're selling a 250 GTO or a DB5 then these might be a no-go but no harm in checking them out if you've got less specialist cars for sale.
