Hi everyone,

I’m looking change my car. I want something relatively fast and fun to drive for around about 5k but I’m certainly no expert so I was hoping for some advice. It doesn’t really need to be too practical so 2 seaters are fine.

What cars would you recommend or advise against??

Cheers

First thing to check is underneath for rust.. Worth looking on the MX-5 Owners Club too... plenty of accessible forums there. To the best of my knowledge reliability is strong, but good service history is worth having.. I'd say buy the nicest you can find!

Rust. Loads of buyers guides out there to show you where to look on an MX5. A high miler with evidence of recent sill work is a far better bet than a low miler that’s been outside all year. Get your head underneath it and have a look with a good torch. They’re great cars, You’ll be surprised how much fun a 1000kgs car can be with just 140bhp. Hunt for a good mk2.5 now before prices rise a bit in the spring. Budget for new poly bushes but ultimately, they are great as standard.

Alternatively a 3.0si Z4 is worth a look.

An NC MX-5 is a good shout... Mine is probably worth a shade above 5k, but they're excellent cars.

Love my MX-5, Miester R coilover,s sticky rubber and a fast road set-up from WIM, that's all it needs. Sadly i'm selling mine in the spring.

Third-gen Toyota MR2 is the other one to look at, mid-engined, small and light, often likened to a budget Elise. Seem to suffer less from rust than the MX-5.

If you're using it as your daily car, E85 Z4 2.5 or 3.0

If you're not, MGTF160/MGF 160 Trophy.

I’m trying to find an ep3 type r for the same budget. Ideally looking to spend less but prices seem all over the place. Might be worth looking into?
