Hello All

I am researching changing my current Lexus RC F for one of the above. Main reason - practicality, I like to carry bikes and I like the idea of 4WD.

These have similar performance but are obviously different types of vehicle. I have had a 330d Touring before so know that I like 6 cylinder diesel estates, and I've had an SUV before so know I like sitting higher up!

I'm not a fan of the latest 3 series dials, and Lexus SUVs have an awful CVT gearbox.

Budget is current car plus around £12-15k.

Any advice? I've only got these two on the shortlist but am open to suggestions.

Thanks for any help!

I had a similar dilemma - tried both and went for the E400d. After 3 months and 6k miles; still pretty chuffed that I did - although pretty sure I would have been equally happy with the X3.
Ultimately, decision came down to better ride and handling from the Merc (try and get one with air-suspension if you can), nicer interior (nappa leather v. Is it really madeof cow Dakota) plus the fact that I preferred the slightly more subtle image of the Merc. Finally, Mercedes were way more keen to do a deal than BMW, meaning I paid considerably less like-for-like on 12 month old, 6k mile cars.
Best bet would be to try both, you’ll probably be happy with either - though I expect the Merc will surprise you the most.

Thanks Spudmaster.

I'm pretty impulsive so went for the E400d this afternoon, just need to arrange collection now! Did plenty of research first, can't wait to explore the car's abilities.

How about flipping it.. BMW 530d X drive estate, Merc GLC / GLE 350/400d? I’m looking at similar options and have been going round in circles for weeks

Thanks for the responses.

530 / GLC / GLE were on the list but didn't make final cut. I've had a few BMWs and decided that if going down that route it would be the X3 for the small SUV experience. Prefer the E class interior to the 5 series & GLC, and the GLE was too expensive. Looks like a beast of a car but relatively new ones seem to be £45k++. I spent £10k less.

The E400d is black. I'm new to Merc so not familiar with all the specs, but it's an AMG Line (to give the smaller 19 in wheels - deliberate choice) with Premium Plus Pack, Comfort Pack, Memory Pack, Air Body Control, pan roof, Burmester, privacy glass etc.

Not sure which of these are standard but it's plenty for me!

Really looking forward to getting to know the Tech (as a newbie to Mercs), and also the big torque and smooth ride.

I think the e400d is a great setup. Reviews have been brilliant for it.

What sort of deal did you get on it?

The car was c. £35k and I was happy with the price offered for mine - it stacked up with all the research I'd done and they didn't try to low ball. Squeezed an extra £1k out of the cost to change.

I'm old school and prefer to buy for cash so can't provide any info on finance rates etc.

Not entirely sure as the details have now been taken off the Merc website, but it has a massive list of kit so I'd say probably.

What does this package bring - I might remember something from the list, for example it has 360 degree camera, Comand etc. but these may be standard for all I know!

I've been keeping my eye on the 400d and I don't think i've seen one with driver assistance package yet. Merc UK seemed to have dumped quite a few into the dealer network as ex Merc UK cars but few of them have over and above spec.

The 360 degree camera was an option on my GLC350d, but I guess that it could be standard on the E class though. I still hate Comand nearly 4 years on! I much prefer the BMW idrive.

I love the interior in the E class. Enjoy your new motor. thumbup
