Hi All - your thoughts please. My son has been driving a Kia Piccanto since he was 17 and wants to "Move up" to something quicker and more stylish. Whilst I recognise that's almost anything... Your thoughts on something good for him would be appreciated.

He's not good with a spanner so reliability would be important and I suppose insurance costs will figure in the equation too - he has no claims and a clean driving licence.

He's thinking Corrado but I'm sure something like a Seat Cupra or BMW 1 series might be better.

Any suggestions?

Let him get what he wants. Although I can see why you'd want to steer him away from a horrible VW.

I suspect the BMW Z4s and Porsche Boxsters in that price bracket are a little too old?
I really like my 2012 RS Clio (200hp naturally aspirated, manual, light weight)
Mazda MX5 comes to mind as well

This is probably going to be shot down in flames, but as your son isn't that much younger than me, I have always favoured fast luxury barges over hot hatchbacks. Each to thier own though!

You won't get a gt86 for £7500, they start closer to £10k.

Could get a nice mx5 if he doesn't need the space?

If he wants something smart with sensible insurance numbers then I'd say a warm hatch is the pick:

1.5T Focus Titanium X 180 very good steer & a nice place to be, with some light haggling you should be able to get one bang on budget.

Vauxhall Astra GTC SRI 200/180 a very nice option & should be insurance friendly as well as a nice mix of modern infotainment.

As you said, 'better than a picanto' is a pretty open goal. What does he actually need/want from a car? Annual mileage? Urban/rural/motorway driving? 2 seats or 4? 2 doors or more? Fwd or rwd?

£7k would get a decent 350z. Equally itd get a decent bmw 123d.

Knowing very few facts, an e92 330i would be a great car, IMO.

Suzuki Swift Sport. A good step up from the Picanto without being too expensive to maintain and insure. Enough poke to be fun and you can rag it everywhere without losing your license. Your budget should be a good second generation.

I suspect he will find insurance a lot more affordable when he passes 25.

I was 23 when I bought my golf GTI mk7. It is brilliant but likely out of his budget. Also I’m 25 and would admit as brilliant as the Golf is it is lacks a bit of fun.

Prior to that I had a 208GTI Prestige. Was an amazing car really fun and agile, much more so than the Golf, down a B road I could definitely shift it quicker. Really easy to live with I use to get 45mpg on a motorway run, more comfortable than an ST and comes with a great spec eg: Sunroof, air con, nav, cruise control and heated seats.

Really recommend a 208GTI I know I’ll definitely own another one without a doubt.
