BMW 340i or Audi TTS
Discussion
Hi, currently have a 340i daily which I’ve done 22k miles in 2.5 years. It’s great in individual Ferrari red and is the shadow edition. However I’m thinking of changing to a TTS. Anyone owned both and have any thoughts? Will I regret it? I know they are not totally comparable. I need some back seats for very occasional use for young kids but not very often. Used to have a mk1 225 TT about 15 years ago which I loved but I was in my mid twenties then.
Cheers

I’ve just swapped from an owned from new 2016 S3 Saloon (so same engine and drivetrain as the TTS) to a 2017 F33 440i.
The 440i is better in almost every measurable way with the exception of virtual cockpit being massively better and more feature rich than BMWs digital cockpit offering with iDrive 6.
Better power delivery, better sound, more connected driving feel, better dynamics. The only real downside to the driving experience is lacking 4wd for the most inclement of weather, but in those circumstances I’ll likely take my mk1 TT or the wife’s Skoda Yeti instead anyway.

Ok, looks like I should explore the MPPK then to keep me happy with what I have. I remember looking at these when I got the 340 and they were about £3k. Why are they about half the price? Can anyone who has one tell me if the difference on sound and performance is real in the real world? Also what does it do for mpg and does this have insurance implications?

Having experienced a few bits and bobs of both platforms and engines, then stick with the BMW.
The TTS might give you a car that looks low/coupe/sporty but they’re pretty much like a low Golf to drive.
Really, granted I haven't driven many bmws but I thought the tt handled much better than a golf gti when I test drove them back to back a few years ago.The TTS might give you a car that looks low/coupe/sporty but they’re pretty much like a low Golf to drive.

The rrp is £3k, I don't think anyone ever paid this. Mine was about £1600 over 2 years ago.Sound is completely different, even in comfort. It's not intrusive and doesn't drone, but it's a lot deeper and sounds far better than the stock exhaust.
In sport / sport+ where the flaps open (and on cold starts) it's a whole other world of noise. Really brings the B58 to life.
Performance wise the torque increase is the most noticeable - it's a lot more urgent low down and it seems to rev harder.
Worth every penny, and actually retained its value when I came to sell my 440i a few months back.
Mpg remained pretty much the same, insurance went up slightly as it was a mild remap (10%) and non standard exhaust.

Thanks for the info, definitely worth looking into then I think. My 340 is well specced in Ferrari red with ivory white nappa seats and sunroof etc. so this could be what I need to keep me in it for another couple of years.
Sounds like a candidate for the “pics of your fast estate” thread

Thanks all, a resounding vote for sticking with what I’ve got. Would love a TTRS but think fuel economy would be too bad plus cost to change would be more than I want.
You don't do much mileage so your fuel costs wouldn't be that different. You can also pick one up for less than £20kI think I’m going to look at mppk for the 340 and then in a couple of years look at a ttrs. With all the changes coming to electrification feels like we should make the most of ICE cars. Personally I just have no interest in a fast electric vehicle whether it’s made by Porsche, BMW or anyone else. Perhaps this will change over time, we will see

With you're annual mileage the fuel difference would be small also the depreciation will be slower than on the 340i so the slightly higher running will be offset & you won't worry about the fuel once you experience the car itself:https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202008293...

I'm a fan of VAG products and the EA888 engine is great for what it is, but there's no way I'd be swapping one with your car that's got that engine and that spec on it. The B58 is just in another league and i think you'd regret it tbh. The only thing the TTS has got going for it is that it's a smaller car, so might be a bit more nimble and obviously the all-weather ability with the 4WD. I'm guessing it'll also have more tech, but none of that would be enough for me to change.
Everything seems to be going 4-cylinder now anyway. I'd enjoy that 6-cylinder engine while you can, as there won't be another one like it soon.
