Good Morning All,

My partner is due a new car in the next few months something newer and safer as we now have a little one.

She currently has a 2005 swift 1.5 that has never skipped a beat but is getting a bit nackered, the fuel consumption is pretty poor.

She travels around 50-60 miles a day mixture of motorway and city traffic. Would that warrant a diesel ?

Budget is between 5-7k. Ideally we would want something with relatively low mileage. and low running costs and fairly new 2014 onwards

I bought a 1.2 petrol bluemotion polo to do similar trips in which she likes but i feel she needs something slightly bigger and this is only a 3 door a pain with a baby seat.

Thoughts so far are

Seat Leon - unsure on which engine to go for
Vw Polo
Vw Golf

For some reason i am not a fan of vauxhall/ford although i did look at some mondeos last night that didnt look too bad.

Any other suggestions that i am missing ?

Would a Fiesta 1.0 not work? I’m sure they do it in a 5dr guise. I know you say you don’t feel much love for Ford, but they do make good cars for the price point.

A c. 20111/2012 focus TDCi would work well.

I think you’ll struggle for a good example of a post 2014 golf on that budget.

If you push the budget a bit a 2013/14 Mazda 3 is a good car for the money.

I had a newish fiesta as a courtesy car and i did think it steered rather well. I will have a little hunt and see if she likes them too !

You are correct the golfs i have looked at are around 2012, diesel bluemotion spec.

Didnt consider the mazda 3 another good suggestion thankyou !

Some nice suggestions there, i quite like the citroen and have always thought the insignias do look pretty good value for money.

Bristol was the only City proposing a diesel ban & they're now walking it back, most places are suggesting ULEZ stye systems but every car I listed was Euro6 so therefore compliant.

Kia or Hyundai for reliabilty , i would go petrol for peace of mind but the dervs are very reliable but you will always wonder if they might get charged when entering city centers in the future

The other half is not so keen on some of the suggestions ive thrown at her so back to the drawing board for a bit..

She is keen on the new suzuki swift and if i can stretch the budget a bit may be able to get into a hybrid one... I dont understand the logic, she has driven her current swift for a good few years now and I feel she could opt for another brand with a slightly better interior feel.

I find with my OH it's better accepting their preferences rather than fighting against it. That said a trip to a dealers that "just happens" to have a Mazda 3 is probably a good idea, quite comfy inside and different enough from the mainstream VAG offerings that it might suit her tastes.

My experience is slow that there’s no point fighting it. It’s her car at the end of the day and if she likes Suzuki then there’s nothing wrong with that.

My OH has a similar liking for Hyundai. Her last two cars have been Hyundai’s and to be fair they were good value and have never caused us any headaches. She’s not a car person at all and just wants a fairly new car that gets from A to B without fuss. I have no doubt that when she’s next due a change it’ll be another Hyundai. If I had my way it would be an i30N but sadly I don’t think she would be too interested!

The new swift is okay. She should go and look at one just to check that there’s enough space for baby and all their needs. Do Suzuki offer anything else she might be interested in? I’m thinking like a Vitara or S cross although I have no idea how they relate to your budget.

Yes i do agree that there is no point trying to push my preference on to her.

I say new but really i mean 2018 ish swifts like below

As long as they are safe and she is happy thats all that matters really. Will keep you posted what we go for and if her mileage wasnt so much i would be suggesting the hot hatch route aswell

Following a change in our commutes and childcare this last week it is going to work out better if i give my partner my car for the longer drive, i will only have a 2 mile drive to drop our son off to nursery form january so i will be in the banger swift and looking to upgrade if i can push through a house move so this thread could be changed to - new car for me 12-18k budget... or i might have my own go at shedding - 2-3k budget -

To be honest in the current climate a shed would make more sense, i wouldnt have to worry about mileage anymore or mpg so now i ask what can i have for 2-3k as a family barge/shed, wouldnt mind a little bit of poke
