2nd hand hot hatch

I currently own 65 plate VW Up and I'm looking for a 5 door hot hatch or warm hatch to replace it for around £7k

Ideally something reliable and mainly want something more pokey than my current Up. I've been looking at the Swift and it seems like a good introduction to hot hatches as it's not ridiculously powerful and I've heard good things. Though my only concern is the size as I am looking to start a family in the next year or two.

Any suggestions?

The swift is a good choice. If it’s to be your only car then it wouldn’t be suitable for family duties but as a second car it’s fine for occasions especially if you get the 5dr. Or you could always change again if and when baby comes along.

Other than that perhaps something like a Kia Ceed GT or any warmish versions of Focus size hatches.? I’m sure people will be along with plenty of suggestions shortly.

Think there are plenty you could be looking at and cover you for baby duties in the future.

Alfa Romeo Guiletta Veloce - 1.4tbi. 170bhp. Warm hatch. Decent steer. Bit different to the usual fair and plenty of room in the rear for baby seats. Boot is ok size too.

Ford Focus St - get the st3. Nicer interior. Great engine. Great steer. Ford focus size so perfect family use.

Honda Civic Type R - Nice looking imho. Good if not great handling. But plenty of poke and rewards being driven. Cheap to maintain and service. Plenty of rear space and good boot size.

Renault Megane RS - probably the best steer. Great car. But also probably least family friendly. Rear is fine but boot is a bit small. Still though, my pick of the hot hatch crop.

Seat Leon FR - warm not hot but good. Economical as well as fairly quick. Handles well. Not the definition of style or entertainment but looks good enough and goes good enough.

Ford Fiesta St - just brilliant. Not family sized for everyday duty but you'd be surprised at how spacious they are for the size. But they handle excellently and are plenty quick enough.

VW Golf Gti - great all rounder. Does everything really well. Probably better then anyone else. Just a bit duller for it imho. However they are very good.

Bmw 330i - not a hot hatch but a mighty fine mid range performance saloon. Great to drive and very practical wth a great engine.

Bmw 130i - very stealthy hot hatch. That goes and handles very well. A few choice aftermarket tweaks and goes very very well. But remains under the radar. Its really very very good. Rare. Rwd. With a proper engine. I really rate them. And plenty big enough for family duties.

Just to add, my son is nearly 5 now and for the past 3 years my wife has run our boring family small MPV. I have a fiesta ST3 which is fine for occasional family use.

I realised soon after he was born that having a hot hatch as a main family car was not going to work. With baby on board the last thing on your mind is going fast and you don't want something with a hard ride. Even the 1.8 civic I had at the time was too harsh.

Family car needs to be spacious and comfy. If it has to be quick your better with a big powerful estate with some luxury. A hot hatch is a good second car imo.

I don't think these days you need an estate for family duties of you have two cars. However I get that maybe the space over the performance is something that will take precedent.

A normal hatchback will be fine for family duties & if you want a warm hatch then something Focus sized would be my recommendation & on that note:

Kia Ceed GT Tech 200 it's a good steer & has a nice amount of power along with nice spec & reliability
