I know that there have been threads like this plenty of times before, but anyway, here’s another.

I like fast cars, and I have a family so I also like cars with four sensible seats, four doors, and a boot.

I miss my Lotus Elise, I miss my B7 RS4, and I regret never having had a Subaru Impreza or Mitsubishi Lancer.

I use a Range Rover Sport for the family car, and notwithstanding the reliability issues, the fact that it is built to tackle a variety of terrains really makes me like using it. No-one does a car which comes close to giving me the various bits from these cars.

So, what I think I want is this...

A car on the scale of, and with the design of an Ur Quattro. Something below 1,400kg, and set up to not fall to pieces on a rough road at high speed, like Richard Hammond’s Impreza didn’t on the Top Gear special.

Four doors, boot, lightweight composition, like the Impreza, but with softer touch materials, and a good stereo. Manual window winders and seat adjustment would be fine.

I then want feel-some steering, I don’t want it over-tyred, and I’d like adjustable suspension like on a McLaren.

Under the bonnet, a light, compact, modern turbocharged V8, as in a 720s, and a fast steering rack, with geometry that makes the front dart for an apex when you roll your wrists to start the wheel turning.

I’d pay a huge amount of money for this and keep it forever.

There’s nothing within a million miles of it, is there?

Light weight and soft touch materials don’t really go hand in hand

Or grow up and buy a FFRR.

If you can’t find quite the car you want, you’ll just need to build it yourself.

Worked out pretty well for Ferdinand Porsche wink

You want something so bizarre that no-one will build it... So build it yourself.

UR Quattro, LS with turbos to suit whatever power, RWD conversion, get someone to make Kevlar and carbon body panels.

I’m not sure that either of them gets close to the ideal of the Quattro or an updated Impreza really, or that I want to grow up.

E63 AMG surely? (perhaps a little heavier, but adjustable engine, steering and suspension). V8, somewhat nippy (sub 4 to sixty). Large enough to carry four adults.

I don't think what you are asking for exists. I stand to be proved wrong.

But an RS6 is the closest I have driven to that brief.

I decided a long time ago, though, that the best all round car we could buy was a FFRR. So we've had a number of them.

I have. I had a C63, which I really did like, but it wasn’t really “sporty.”

I sold it after I was given a base model Focus in France, and realised again just how a good chassis could feel. I did like it enough that Inhave an SL63 now, but it’s a cruiser, or a dragster, now a sports car.

Ur Quattro sized plus 1400kg plus 4 doors ... yeah, that ain’t gonna work. Modern can’t compete with stuff from 30 years ago on weigh or size.

Maybe a Panamera turbo S might come close but it’s not going to deliver everything on that list.

I can see the comments below the PH First Drive now...

"Manual windows in a car of this class is ridiculous."
"That 300kg has to have come from somewhere, I wouldn't want to run one long-term. I can't see how it's possible without affecting long-term reliability."
"Just too small for anyone with a family."
"I test drove one but it's exhausting, you can't relax for a moment without it veering off to one side. Who'd want a car you can't drive with one hand on the wheel?"
"Lateral g figures are rubbish compared to the 3 series and A4, they should put proper tyres on it."
"The engine isn't a realistic proposition for 99% of driving, you couldn't actually own one."
"Still pointless soft touch plastics and 4WD, call me when you make one sub-1200kg."
"Just felt too soft after my M Sport BMW, nowhere near sporting enough."

And then they sell about three while everyone who'd claimed to be queuing up for a car like this mysteriously decides to stick with their 15 year old remapped Saab.

Maserati qp iv?

Twin turbo v8
Square quattro style
4 doors
Probably not that heavy.

I can’t voucher for the not falling apart aspect , but they aren’t expensive and you could allocate a decent amount for servicing

Exactly why I drive a 16 year old Impreza wagon and spend a couple of grand a year keeping it on the road.
