Looking at replacing my Golf 2.0 TDI .

Looking at the newer hatchbacks - put off by the new Golf due to the lack of buttons and the complicated computer system.

could anyone tell me how the A3 and Focus performs re handling / cornering?

Looking for a speedy diesel hatchback - new or nearly new - which also holds the road well!

The new golf is a good enough car to drive as is the new A3, the focus is about the same as the golf, all of them have electric steering so aren’t exactly engaging.

Sporty and diesel also don’t go together

I've had a couple of Mk3 Focus, a 2016 ZetecS 2.0 TDCi and then my current 2018 ST3 (petrol).

The diesel was essentially a detuned version of the diesel ST, I always felt it lacked a little bit of grunt but nothing a small remap wouldn't fix. If I'd kept it longer then I'd have gone down that route, but ended up going for the petrol ST as it was the car I wanted.

Going off the specialist forums, most diesel ST owners seem pretty pleased with their car and not really any complaints. If I was going diesel again then I'd probably go down that route.

Handling wise, both the ZetecS and ST are spot on (in my opinion). Hold the road well, and a surprisingly smooth ride.
