Hi,

There is a car on ebay I am interested in. I have emailed the guy saying I would drive to his location and buy the car (I work in a key industry and the location is next to one of my sites). He has said he cannot do this due to his location (?). He has given me the below options,

We can do everything through the transport company using Shiply, they will take care of everything and arrange the delivery to your address. If this is going to be a quick sale, I will let it go for £4,880 with the delivery charges included. If you decide to buy the vehicle let me know, as I have a lot of people inquiring about and send me an e-mail with your full details (Full name, Address, Phone number). As soon as I have your details I will pass them to the shipping company and they will start the procedures. Next step they will get in touch with you and send you an invoice for the vehicle, the tracking number to check the status of the delivery at any time and all the rest of the transaction details. After you've received the invoice you'll need to make the payment by bank transfer to the transport company (NOT to me) and they will hold the money into their bank account until you receive, inspect and agreed to keep the vehicle. For the buyer's peace of mind I've also added a 5 DAYS REFUND POLICY so if you won't like the vehicle, you'll receive a full refund, no fees or taxes deducted. If the vehicle is not as described, the transport company will transfer the money back into your bank account. If you decide to keep the vehicle after the 5 days inspection period, you will need to sign the owner transfer papers and only then I will get the money from the transport company.

I will agree for a 5 days of full inspection period ( after the date you receive the vehicle ). This means that you have 5 days to inspect the vehicle for any damages and decide if you want to keep it or not!
Because I will sign eBay's return policy, your money will be insured by them and you will have the option to reject the deal, only if we go through PayPal as well. If this is the case, you will receive a full refund (money back) from PayPal and I will have to take the vehicle back on my cost!
You can read more about it following the link below:

Should I just walk away from this, is it a case of "too good to be true"?

Thanks!

If Shiply can go there then so can you, it is that simple to me. I would be walking away from this one.

Yes. Or go ahead and start a new thread next week telling us about a car you bought from eBay that hasn't turned up yet and the seller isn't responding.

It's actually more convincing than usual because it appears to be written by a native English speaker, but it's obviously still a load of ste.

It’s American English though.

100% scam, report it on eBay. Do NOT send him any money, on PayPal or any other method.

Very well known scam

There is a Shipley and a Shiply, both exist, but as pointed out, they will not act as payment intermediaries. Scam.

I think it's more reassuring that people feel able to. Scams like this would be pointless if everyone was able to spot them.

Was it ALSALE MOTORS Oxford?
As noted in the Porsche section, quite convincing advert but a range of cars for approx 1/3rd of the value of the exact same car advertised on autotrader.

Just been looking at purchasing a digger through ebay classifieds. Started emailing the guy and it all seemed a bit too good to be true that he was going to deliver it free of charge and use this escrow service so I can turn it away if I wasnt happy with it and get my money back.

I copied and pasted some of his email in to google and it brought this up. Guess what it's the exact same script.

Thanks for posting this otherwise I might just have fallen for it.

Also be wary of any escrow accounts . It seems that the car doesnt turn up ( or even exist ) and the money is still lost and can't be recovered. If you cannot physically go see the item. be it car , van or now even a dog its a scam.

Clearly it is often a convincing story or a ' good price' or ' rare opportunity' but there is no such thing as a free lunch . Ever.

Hi,

I had a similar message from a van on eBay, the emails when something like this (from 'seller' in reverse time order).

Hopefully posting this here will help people to find this thread and realise it is likely a scam (very similar wording used to previous examples).

Cheers,

Andy

email 2:
"Due to the current situation viewings are temporarily suspended in line with government advice.
As traveling is forbidden, but the routes for transport are open and available during this covid-19 emergency situation, there are only 2 ways to do this sale:

  • The first option is to use a transport company that deals with the transaction as an escrow. This is the perfect way to make things easier, fast and safe for both of us. I will pay the company, so you will not pay extra money. You will get the camper to your home address and you can check it before making the final decision. I think this is the perfect way for us.
Please let me know how you want to continue with this transaction and I will provide more details."

email 1:
"I still have it for sale. The asking price is £X
Everything is in perfect working order, doesn't have any mechanical issues. The chassis is solid, it doesn't have dents or rust. I have its full service history."

Glad I spotted this thread. I have just a few minutes ago had the same email convo with someone selling a digger.

Forgot to mention I've recently moved permanently to Halkirk and didn't had time to sell it before my departure from Birmingham and since I am in Halkirk there are only 2 ways to do this sale:
The first option is to use a transport company that deals with the transaction, digger and the money as escrow. I travel for my work and I do not have time to bring the digger and I think your free time is limited too, so this is the perfect way to make things easier, fast and safe for both of us. I will pay the company, so you will not pay extra money then the digger price. You will get the digger to your home address, and you can check the digger before making the final decision. I think this is the perfect way for us.

The second option is by using PayPal pay after delivery service: https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/pay-after-de...

Please let me know how you want to continue with this transaction and I will provide more details.
Regards,
Lee

I have had the same scam a few times.

I claim my brother lives in Halkirk and can come round to check the item for sale out. I pick a random road in Halkirk and ask if they know it. Oddly, they all usually go very quiet at this point.
