Wondered if anyone has bought from Chris Harris very own Collecting Cars and more importantly were you happy with your purchase and was it as described?

I’m bored at home and want a new car but In this period I’m not going to risk buying remotely without looking from eBay or autotrader etc.....but then I started looking at Collecting Cars. It seems such a great idea, generally sold by enthusiasts and the amount of photographs is almost as good as seeing the car first hand.

So I’m thinking this.....I buy a car I like, send a transporter to pick up the car and deliver it to me, everyone skips off into the sunset happy. But I’m wondering what happens if I get the car and it’s not as described and doesn’t even start? Collecting Cars are clear that they are an introductory company and bow out at the point of sale.

Is this a case of ‘buyer beware’ and you lose all rights if it breaks down after 1 mile? Or is there remote buying rights like buying things from the internet?

Has anyone else bought and been happy or had issues? How were these resolved? I need something new not to drive and I’m wondering if there’s a chance to pick something nice up at a lower price as it’s the last thing on peoples minds at this point of time....

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

I too have been looking on there.
It doesn't look like there are any bargains but the cars look to be good quality.
Are the cars actually selling though.

I advertised a car with them a few months ago. The experience was generally good and I took plenty of pics of the underneath of my car to help buyers make a decision. I think this is what is lacking in a lot of these types of sales, collecting cars don't come and check the car out themselves but do write the description, based on what you tell them.
Normal auction rules apply & as a buyer, I wouldn't be parting with any money unless I got to see it in person. I get that a lot of people are happy to do this, but there are no procedures in place to stop the sale of lemons (although if the car was obviously junk I got the impression that CC would decline to offer it).

A little over 18 months ago I had breakfast with the founder of Collecting Cars, and a few months later I became employee number one - so I'll respond to a few points from my end.

Firstly, to address your overriding question, there is at least one PHer who has bought from us. See AndrewD here:
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I know some others that are on PH, but until they confirm the purchase as per Andrew's post in that thread, that's their business.

For posterity, it's worth noting that Chris Harris doesn't run Collecting Cars. He hosts our podcast, but I don't want anyone thinking that Chris is responsible for any of the cars listed or content therein. That's handled by us.

Even before the current crisis, 95% of our sales happened without a physical viewing. As you've alluded to, we endeavour to provide as much information and clarity through the photographs and description as you might get from seeing a car in person. We'll typically aim to list a car with 120-150 photos. I think the record is somewhere north of 250 photos...

Every car listed must be as described. As has been stated here, the normal rules of buying and selling privately apply. We encourage questions if there are points not covered by the description - or if people want to see more. If there is something in particular that would give a prospective buyer even more confidence, then you will undoubtedly see them ask for that. For example, bidders have sometimes requested videos to be added to the listing of the car starting, idling or driving, which the sellers are happy to provide.

In just over 10 months of live auctions, we've sold more than 180 lots, with total sales in excess of £4.5 million. It's always interesting to compare views on prices across platforms. There are some well-informed observers on PH, though elsewhere you will see people amazed at what they perceive as an incredibly cheap price (in reality, they've simply not been paying attention to the market movement over the last four years).

I’m registered on collecting cars but haven’t bought as yet!

Some cars I expect to go for loads are selling fairly cheap and some I’d expect to be cheap are going for quite a lot,

Listings at CollectingCars are well written and photographs are excellent but I can't see how the platform is safer than anything else including a well known internet auction site. There is nothing preventing a dishonest seller to not disclose any mechanical issues, and as rightly pointed above, private sale rules apply. Personally, I would inspect a potential purchase before bidding, just like with other platforms.

True. And 6% buyers premium, deducted straight away, is a lot. Wonder if this is refunded if the car doesn't match the description? If I'm buying a car privately, why would I want to pay another 6% anyway?

I too have just found this site and now keep my eye on it. Seems an ideal place in our times right now.

Perhaps we should say what we are watching?

Out of interest, it is that 575

Looks nice. Says trade so does this mean you'll get all the usual dealer facilities/warranty if you are the highest bidder?

Just to pitch in briefly and without wishing to break the advertising rules that I may have had a hand in some years ago...

A significant difference between CC and ebay is the team behind it. It's not a faceless organisation - there's a team of people doing a lot of work selecting and curating the listings, and ensuring buyers and sellers are happy.

And I'll declare an interest... I'm involved now. It's an exciting project.

Seems doubtful given that they're auctioning the car, even if its labelled as an introduction company that leads to a sale, seems like a huge grey area.

There was a lovely Clio Williams on there recently. I almost tried to buy it, but stopped myself at the last minute as it would have cost me the purchase price of the car + a divorce. hehe

Exactly, and private sales they are but with a trade front.
There is absolutely no come back with this type of sale and no different to other sales platforms out there.

I was watching that one.

So it's £18,285 including the fee's.

Around it's true trade value?

But the million dollar question is.

Do I get the fee's refunded if it's not as described when I go to pick it up?

£1035 is a lot of fee's
