Best way to sell a car in the current environment?
Discussion
It's not a great time at all to sell a used car but as we were going to take a hit in income before this virus took hold, we definitely have to now.
WBAC are obviously offering rock bottom prices so I would still prefer to sell privately, but wondering if anyone is buying privately right now and if they are, how does that work with social distancing? For example, would you let someone test drive your car alone if they left some ID. I did it once before and made the guy leave his credit card and driving license behind but I still crapped it until he came back and vowed never to do it again.
Or should I just accept that I'm going to take a massive hit and go to WBAC?

There is no "good place" to sell any vehicle.
If you are after as much as possible, you will NOT get that by selling anywhere that has connections to the motor trade. That is, any garage, WBAC, Evans Halshaw, auction houses, etc, etc. They are ALL in the game to make a profit out of you. It does, though, involve the quickest procedure for you.
Selling privately WILL give you the most money - BUT, it does involve a long drawn out affair and often dealing with brainless idiots. And it will cost YOU money to advertise.
Everyone thinks their car, like their house, is worth more than actually is. The quote that "that's what the main dealers have got their cars up for" is usually VERY wrong. Privately, you can't offer part-exchange, finance, or extra warranty, THEY can. You also don't have a selectable range of cars like they have. You only have one - so you are looking for the person that wants THAT particular car.

It will partly depend on the car - what is it?It is worth giving the classifieds a go, surely? I would definitely only deal with people over the phone so you can gauge if they’re reasonable people before a physical visit.
You could then chat about options to view/test car. Ideas - disinfect car surfaces in buyer’s presence, you both wear masks and latex gloves, demo drive with windows down a bit and buyer sits in rear left seat?
Good luck.

Put it on eBay as a classified sale or on this site
Agree. Decent photos of a well presented car help enormously. I have also found eBay really helpful. I start by advertising at the upper end of the range for comparable cars. Once I have watchers I gradually reduce the asking price until I start getting bites. eBay notifies watchers of price changes; a useful nudge. A couple of buyers have told me this is what has prompted them to get in touch.braddo said:

There's no alternate universe where people queue up to pay more than anyone else for used cars. You can either sell high or easy. to do both is the exception to the rule.
If the OP needs the money urgently then the best solution is to look for the best bid from trade buyers. Most offer online guides, a concensus of which should give anyone an idea of the likely transaction price.
Or go for gold, invest time and money and sell the car privately. You may sell straight away or you may still have it in 3 months and the trade buyers' bids will be less than today.
Only the OP knows what is right for him.

It’s a LR Discovery 4. I may try eBay and hope they just give me the money and take it away. It’s the test drive I’m concerned about.
https://disco3.co.ukMake it cheap and it will sell quick, lots of buyers waiting in the wing on the site.
Is it an 8 speed (gear knob or stick )
