Interested in a VW Scirocco
Discussion
I had a 2007 fn2 and replaced it with a 2009 scirocco with the twin charged 1.4 engine. The scirocco had full leather and the adjustable suspension. It was a far more comfortable place than the civic and was surprisingly brisk.
The engine expired after only 12000 miles though. There decent to drive though, wife’s 2017 diesel r line scirocco is almost 3 years old now and has been faultless in that time. It’s going back to the lease company in the next month though.

jesus looks like the 160 bhp engine aint a joke.
So is the next best option the 2.0 then? I just want a couple of years off from high running costs and just a reliable good looking car. There exists a 122BHP version of the 1.4L but can't find one anywhere.
I've also been reading that 2013+ 160 BHP engines are good, is this true?
I heard they did some changes on the later models that solved the issues on the twin-charged one but I'm not sure how true that really is. It's a overly-complicated engine really, so i just wouldn't bother. They discontinued it for good reason. So is the next best option the 2.0 then? The 2.0 TSI engine is the one to go for, which is what I'm running now. Good power and good economy too. It's a great all-round engine and proven to be pretty reliable.
I previously had the single-turbo 1.4 TSI 122 BHP unit and, while it's actually not a bad little engine, it just doesn't suit the car. For me, something like the Scirocco needs a relatively powerful petrol engine for it to make sense.
Mrs had a '58 2.0 TSi - bought at c72k and sold at ~90k when things were looking like they were soon to start playing up.
Pro:great spec, looks good, goes ok
Bad: Had an intake fault, there was a weird noise from the suspension, had 4 CV gaitors in 20k miles, it was coked up, average 24mpg (mostly suburban granted), chain was rattling, used 1l of oil every c2k miles, steering wasn't the greatest for feel (standard VAG)

alright then 2.0 it is. The later 1.4 160 BHP cars are a tad over my budget anyway. The 2.0 TSI engine is the one to go for, which is what I'm running now. Good power and good economy too. It's a great all-round engine and proven to be pretty reliable.

What do you get around town in yours? I spent a year with my Type R and i don't commute to work or anything so my annual miles are 4-5K. The mpg was around 23.6 and that's with barely any high revving. So I was seeking good fuel economy in the scirocco, what a shame that the most efficient engine theoretically is a no-go!
Going from 2.0 Type R to 2.0 TSI, running costs probably arent going to be a whole lot better are they?
It's a turbo motor so it should be better than your civic when keeping it off boost. My old 122 BHP version got about the same MPG I'm sure, so the bigger engine is a no brainer really.

I've been down this road, scirroco petrols suffer unless 2012 onwards regardless of 1.4/2.0.
Have you considered an Alfa giulietta 1.4? Various power guises and they look alright for a hatch.
What issues did you suffer? The 2.0 TSI engine is a strong unit in any year. The only thing that you need to be wary of is that they're chain-driven and prone to snapping, similar to the MK6 Golf GTI engine. There's an uprated part i believe that solves the issue. I've also heard some people say that they use a fair bit of oil but it can't be any more than a Civic Type R.Have you considered an Alfa giulietta 1.4? Have you done the maths to work out what you’re actually going to save on running costs with a more efficient car on 4-5K miles a year? I feel like it’s not quite as much as you imagine it to be. Going from say 25mpg to 35-40mpg isn’t that big a jump, if you can even get that far - town driving is never going to be very efficient.
Not sure what your budget is but have you considered an Astra GTC 200:

Yes OP on your yearly mileage going from current 24mpg to a car with say 30mpg is only saving you about £250 a year, cost of changing would probably make keeping you current type R the most cost efficient use of money. However if you want a change anyway the why not.Going to look at one / two this week , wife has always liked these & im starting to struggle with her fiesta st , I’ve been using her car a lot to try & keep the mileage Down , but the ride is causing me issues .
She loves the st , didn’t want to change it but subject to a test drive I think she can be persuaded, but if the ride is crashy like the st it’s a no started .
Was hoping to keep both our cars until retirement , then goto one , but can’t carry on with hers , so hopefully scirocco is a bette ride , but still fun .

Also take a look at the Astra GTC in 1.6T or VXR (which has adjustable dampers which softens the ride just enough) form. She loves the st , didn’t want to change it but subject to a test drive I think she can be persuaded, but if the ride is crashy like the st it’s a no started .
