Is the issue that bad then? I guess the problem would be the same for the 528i?
At the end of the day every car/engine seems to have its problems...annoyingly!
OP, have you thought about...
- Skoda Octavia VRS.
- JDM Subaru Legacy (a TBSTi is the one I’d want).
- Or of course a Subaru Forester STi (mine will be for sale soon).

A Mondeo or the legend that is the Subaru Forester STi...mate, your priorities are messed up! Plus, only one of those 2 cars is going to lose a ton of its value in the time you’d own it.I’m kidding, running the Forester as a daily drive takes commitment and isn’t for everyone.
I do think the Octavia is a good shout though. I think the current and previous gen cars a great looking things.
What about a Seat Leon Cupra ST?
I know one of them is a bit above your budget and the other is too old but just for reference, if a decent spec came up it may be worth a look?

Have considered these but problems with diff and timing chains put me off tbh.
Whatever I buy will be our family car for the next 4 to 5 years and whilst I know every car will have its issues, I’m trying to avoid cars with well known issues.
I’ll do around 8k a year with a lot of very short journeys and no commuting.
The Mondeo seems to fit the gap between bland and interesting without having any major issues of note but happy to consider any other options ....

Yes, Focus ST is on my list but none locally to go and see. My issues here are I really wanted an auto (not the end of the world if not though) and is it big enough for a family of 5 with grown up kids, hence wanting to see one in the flesh.
I always thought the rear space in the 3 series was quite good for the size of the car and the Focus has those Recaro buckets which take up a lot of rear space.

Just bought mine. NA VTEC engine is proving entertaining. I got 40mpg on a run and 22mpg when I 'made progress on a 10 mile 'B' road yesterday.....
It doesn't have the cache of a BMW but will, no doubt, prove less expensive in repairs, etc.

Bit of a thread resurrection but I've an itch for a BMW 328i Touring M-Sport.
I currently have an F11 M-Sport that has been great but I don't need a diesel (It's the 520d) and fancy a change this seems to tick the boxes.
They do seem to be quite few and far between, does anyone have any real world advice on them, I know timing chains but the same could be said for the engine in my 520d so I do tend to live on the side of danger a little.
My must haves would be LED Headlights, Heated Seats, HK and pro Nav as I have that at the moment.
