Looking for suggestions for what cars to be looking for to suit a family.

Sick of losing cash on cars. I just want a safe basic car to get from a to b.

What's your budget?

Our leased Tiguan goes back in September and I'm going to buy a stopgap car with a budget of about £1k-£1.5k.

I'm thinking Octavia estate, E46 Touring, E39 Touring, SAAB 9-5 estate . . .

The Tig replaced an '04 CRV so I may look into a high mileage one of those on the basis of Honda reliability and known quantity.

We had a 52 Mazda 6 estate prior to that but I think they may well be getting past their best now.

I'm also wondering whether I could live with an R53 MCS if it's only going to be for a few months. Two small kids - 10 and 7 - and the dog will squeeze in the back. He just won't be able to move!

What's the budget?

I'm going the same way at the moment, I bought a nearly-new Skoda Rapid 1.2TSI 18 months ago on the premise it would be cheap white goods motoring and would stop me thinking about cars for a while. Its easily lost £4000 in 18 months.

I ran a 2003 Passat Estate for a couple of years and bloody loved it for reasons I'm not all that sure about, but I've regretted selling it since and am on the look out for another. Unfortunately most are in pretty unloved condition now.

Honda Accord should fit the bill quite nicely. I'm also contemplating a 2008 on Laguna Mk3, they seem pretty durable from what I've read.

Shed budget, 1500 tops.

I've lost about 3500 on my car in under a year. I've had it with Audi and vw. Half of that loss has been bills.

I've got two options. Shed it. Or take out a 6 grand loan and buy a ten grand car. That will cost me 150 a month for 3 years. Cheaper than leasing, and get a car at end of it. Top pick for that option is a Mazda 6 estate.
