How far to go to buy used car
Discussion
For the perfect car? Pretty far!
I had a similar situation when looking to buy my current car, it seemed that all or most of the decent examples were 150+ miles away from me. In the end I found one ~80 miles away so a 160 mile round trip. Committed to viewing it after lengthy back and forth with the owner, my brother-in-law very kindly volunteered to drive me there!
In summary, do as much ground work as you can and try and get as much info from the seller as possible - ask for extra pics, video walk around of the car etc etc. Then in the end it's a leap of faith really!

I had a 523 mile trip home after getting (I flew up) my 63 absolutely loved the drive home.
C63 ? 10 miles in one of those is an adventure, the first one i collected was the PP model on 1.61mm tyres on a wet day ... we have just picked up a new shape C63 estate and its the perfect everyday car, anyway i digress... I bought a second hand car from a main dealer (of a different brand to the car I bought) an hour and a half away - it had a couple of minor but expensive issues that I should have got the selling dealer to take care of for free, but I just couldn't ever justify taking a half day off work to go back there as would have been more cost-effective for me to pay to get the work done locally. So for me I'll never travel more than 30 minutes from now on!

I am looking to buy an Audi TT mk2 3.2. But it seems like all the low mileage good qualitylow priced ones are up north (I'm in London). To me it seems risky paying for a train ticket to see these cars as they could all be rubbish and I would have wasted £60 on a train ticket and 8 hours there and 8 hours back.
How far would you go for the perfect car?
Try a few close to you to see if in principal it's the car for you. If you find one further away, speak with the vendor to get a feel for how they are - if you think they are OK then book a RETURN ticket (and be ready to use the return!) to check it out.How far would you go for the perfect car?
I did the opposite of you - travelled from near Leeds to Cardiff to get the right TT 3.2. It was worth the trip.
If my car current sells in the near future I could be looking at a flight to Edinburgh to look at its replacement. (after I do a shed load of homework that the cars worth the trip)
I'm torn between booking a return or singles, and might even turn the trip into a weekend away with SWMBO.
But for me it is a niche market car and not that many in the right spec out in the market place so you've got to travel.

echoing others, i have / will travel for the right vehicle. if its a good'un with a proper history and you've spoken to the seller and are happy that its worth travelling for then i have no problems doing that.
however i cant be bothered to travel long distances just to look at a vehicle, if its a run of the mill motor you'll find one anywhere. if its one ive convinced myself im buying then i go if not i dont bother!
i really do belive that you can buy a car based on an advert and a phone call with the seller, ive yet to be stung and have travelled quite a distance based on this theory. as mentioned above i wont travel to see a car from an advert/seller i dont think meets my percieved 'genuiness' if thats a word haha.
