It sounds like your wife also wants something with a bit more go too.

2008 2.0 Focus Titanium 74k

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

2005 Audi A3 Sport 62k

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

2007 Clio Dynamique 32k

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

2007 C200 SE Coupe 42k (same size as the focus)

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

2004 C200 SE Hatchback 54k

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

2001 BMW 316ti

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

2006 Honda Civic Sport 58k

All the above are decent cars but I'd go for the Mercedes(yes I'm bias)/Focus/Honda in that order.

You timed it well back from racing yesterday, the Mercs are fine reliability (get her to test drive one) wise but if you want 5 doors I could never recommend an A/B Class as they are awful cars, if you want a robust 5 door (just keep looking for autos & you'll get your way) with some poke & lowish miles then here's a few options:

2008 1.6 Focus Titanium 72k

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

2007 1.6 Focus Ghia 22k FSH

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

2008 1.6 Mazda3 Takara 60k

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

2006 1.6 Audi A3 Sport 80k

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

2006 118i SE 70k

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

2006 1.8 Civic EX 69k

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

2008 Kia Ceed 1.6 61k (under budget)

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

Toyota Auris 1.6 T Spirit 58k

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

If you can live with two doors then the are a couple of leftfield options all around the same size as a 3 series:

2003 320ci SE 59k

2005 325i M Sport 80k

2004 CLK240 Avantgarde

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

2005 CLK320 Avantgarde 68k

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

2004 A4 Convertible Sport 1.8T 71k

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

2003 3.0 Sport 80k

I'm sure you love her, but if that's how she treats the Polo then I'd say don't bother ! Or maybe some gentle encouragement to drive what sounds like a perfectly good little car properly....

If you want an automatic Civic, get a proper auto, not an i-SHIFT. They are absolute crap. Same goes for the Auris, which was only available with the MMT (until the current shape). These are not proper autos. They are automated manuals, and I can guarantee they will ride the clutch more than your wife does.

You've got 3 grand to spend, not enough budget to be too fussy. Does it work properly? Is it automatic? If yes, it's on the list.

+1 for IS.

I have a IS300 Sportcross on an 05 plate. Had new MOT/front brakes/major service today - came in at £324 inc. Nil advisories. No worrying things to watch out for in the forthcoming year.

Amazingly reliable, well screwed together cars. i am, of course, a massive fan of them smile

Mini Cooper with the crazy CVT 'box.
I have one (for the missus) and I love it's ridiculousness. My 2001 car was £1,400.
What do you mean 'that's too old'... it's the newest of my three cars!

I'd like to congratulate you on fulfilling a brief that included a two tone interior for double shed money.
Absolutely ridiculous.
