Merc ML or Ranger Rover

I've only got £2k to spend on getting myself a car. I've narrowed it down to either a Mercedes ML270 or Range Rover diesel.
I realise I've got to get a high mileage, 2000-ish model but which one to choose.
Looking to you guys for experience and views. I know its a troublesome amount of money for a big 4x4 but its either that or wait another year with no transport.

Both are a bad choice at that money. Either one is just biding its time to throw a bill up higher than its purchase price. Hilux surf? Kia sorrento? Hyundai santa fe? Anything should be more reliable.
