So my time at my current role is coming to an end, my next job will not offer a company car, thank god, I can be £400 a month better off.

Anyway, it so happens my current company car will be due to go back to VW, so good timing. The car is a VW Gold GTD 2014 plate with 60,000 miles on. I have had it from new. I know the car inside out and a few of its flaws. The price VW are offering me is £12.5k. I speced it fairly high when I got it.

The car actually wont be for me, but my wife, and I will use hers (2008 Polo) until I am happy with my new job etc, then get something bigger.

My original plan was to get her a Seat Leon FR 1.4 with the tech pack. She loves the Golf, so thought get her the Seat version as they're cheaper. Petrol as she only does about 7,000 miles a year.

So I would be looking at a 2015 Seat with about 20,000 miles, for a bit less than the Golf.

I didn't think the Golf would be an option to buy, mainly because VW ask silly money for their cars through the purchase scheme.

I was also thinking, if I decide to buy the Golf, I could "possibly" let it go to auction, attempt to find out what auction it gets sent to and attempt to get it for less... bit of a risk though. I know people who have done this both successfully and unsuccessfully.

So given the choice, which would you get the newer, less miles Seat, or the older more miles, but know the car well VW?

A quick trawl of Autotrader would suggest that £12.5k for a well-specified 2015 Golf GTD with 60k on the clock is a decent price, so financially, it makes sense.

As for whether to keep the Golf or go for the Leon, I would put forward the old argument of "better the devil you know".

The Golf is a late 14 plate, was mid July registered, so weeks off being a 64 plate.

Better the devil you know...... I like it.

I am also thinking I could get it MOT'd before I buy it and get the paintwork completely mopped... At my current company expense of course.

All our cars go back with excess miles and repairs, but mine is immaculate, and will be under the mileage, So an invoice for MOT and "paintwork" repair won't be an issue. It has a few swirls in it as it's the gunmetal grey colour.

it kind of does, but, my theory is if I went for the Golf, then it would be a low mileage in a few years.

However, a change is also nice. I do love the look of the new Leon's, and with the tech pack they're exceptionally well equipped.

By all means stick to the GTD if those 7,000 miles consist of fairly long (25+ miles, 50+ mph) commutes or you'll be able to give the car a really good motorway run every couple of weeks if it's only going to be used for a few miles around town day-to-day.

If it's a lot of short journeys the DPF could present a problem.
