I'm after some ideas of what to replace my 57 plate Mondeo 2.5T Estate with.

It needs to be a similar size to the Mondeo, both for passengers and overall carrying capacity.

It MUST be petrol.

Definitely no SUVs, 4x4 etc.

Budget is "flexible". Ideally, I'll keep this car a good few years.

Initially I was thinking another Mondeo - and I'm still very keen on that idea. The 2.0 Ecoboost seems like a nice car, and in Titanium X Sport trim it's a pretty good package. I've had a look at 5 series (late model E61, early F11), but I used to have an E61 M5, and I think I'd be forever comparing with that. I've also looked at the A6, but there's not much about, and what there was didn't grab me.

I've considered the Jag XF, but the only petrol estates are the 5 litre supercharged, and right now they're too expensive.

Most recently, I've started considering Volvos. Not really familiar with these either, but the Polestar models look quite interesting. Not sure what the differences are between the V50, V60 and V70 - I'll take a look on Wikipedia.

Is there anything exciting out there that I've overlooked, or any horror stories on the Polestar Volvos?

I came out of a 9-5 Aero with similar requirements.

Ended up in an E500, but they're rather rare.
535i was on the list, but they're equally unusual I'm afraid.

Large. Fast. Petrol. Estate.
Generally, pick 2. 3 if you're lucky.

Would you consider leasing for 24/36 months??

Depends the miles you are doing each year but it could work out cheaper.

The Golf R Estate seems to be mentioned as being a good deal just now on a lease but it has 4X4.

Plenty of other cheaper estates you could lease if you wanted to go down the lease route smile

Golf R doesn't tick the Large box - it's very definitely a mid size car.

In fact, my criteria were; large, fast, petrol, estate and manual.

I found one F11 535i, it was expensive and sold before I could see it.

I'd say the Mondeo ticks all the boxes & they're a good underrated (because the badge) car.

2016 Titanium (with X Pack)

Dependant on your budget here are a few alternatives:

Awesome post - sincere thanks.

The first car posted is the one I've been looking at, and the one that started my thought process. I'm seriously considering a trip to look at the Volvo tomorrow - although no pictures probably means it's being "prepped"

You can rule out a Volvo V60 polestar then, it's not a large estate.

As a fellow 57 plate Mondeo 2.5T estate owner, can I ask why you are getting rid of yours?

Mk4 Mondeos are huge inside as you know, so it will be hard to replace it with something as capacious inside. Off the top of my head, the only cars I can think of that are similar size are Skoda Superb estate or Merc E Class estate. Everything else is noticeably smaller, even the big Volvos.

Also, the Ford is (relatively speaking) quite light considering how much space it takes up on the road- 1600kg. I'm always surprised when I hear how so many cars are approaching two tons nowadays. So if you want the same or better performance, keep an eye on the power-to-weight ratio.

I'm mightily stuck with even considering a replacement. Nothing ticks as many boxes. That's not to say there aren't better cars, of course there are but nothing else strikes the same sweet spot of spacious, reliable, quick, cheap (except in fuel but even then 25mpg is not too bad), lovely to drive, well equipt and a nice place to sit. I've had mine for 40k now and still struggling to think of much newer I'd want to swap it for unless splashing out a *lot* of cash.

yikes Oh no! Sorry to hear that, omniflow. Always horrible when a car that fits so perfectly in your life meets its demise frown

I tend not to look at the mpg read out on mine smile. All I know is that I can get nearly 450 miles from a tank if solely used on motorways/dual carriageways, but town driving wipes a hundred miles off that total. Done 14k in mine since I got it last July, and like you, I'd struggle to know what I'd replace it with for sensible money.

Edited to update, OP just realised you're the poster asking about wet clutches on the Powershift thread. That first 2014 Mondeo 2.0 Ecoboost 240PS on your list above looks the job tbh.

Also rather smaller than the Mondeo but the RS's are probably the only Audi that's going to be nicer to drive than the Mondeo.

That they're slower than the 2.5T and auto only would annoy me too much personally but if you can put up with that then probably a pretty good call.

The powershift box seemed fine to me, and the car seemed fast enough. It also looks like they're fairly cheap to re-map for around 40 more BHP. That was why I was asking on the other thread about wet / dry clutch. It seems the clutch in the powershift Mondeo is rated to 450Nm of torque, so a re-map should be fine.

It's also not my only car. I have an Alfa 156 GTA SW, which is manual, quite powerful and makes a lovely noise. The problem with this car is that it's no longer big enough to be the main family car. However, having owned it for 15 years I have no plans to get rid of it any time soon.

That Insignia also looks tempting. I had a standard one as a rental car a few years ago, drove it from Naples to Bari and it was ok. Nothing to write home about, but nothing to moan about either. A 320Bhp 4wd turbo might actually be quite good.

The problem with something like the E63, is that it's either an 8 year old car with a dated interior, or if newer, it's massively expensive.

However, I do think I'll spend the next 2 weeks looking at various alternatives, settle on the Mondeo and the first one in the list above will have been sold. I'll then have to wait 3 months for another decent one to come up for sale and it will be £1500 more and missing some toys.

Have to say a few years back I had an Insignia rental for a weekend, not an estate but the hatchback. Similarly views to your own, it was a bit, hmmmm, anodyne, nothing much to excite, nor offend, but as iirc, a tedious 1.8 diesel, hated the way it went by the end of the weekend, but by heck it was a Tardis and swallowed the most amazing amount of stuff.

Can imagine getting along with that 325bhp vxr, you could get around completely under the radar.
