Hi,
Today I went to the tip in my year old astra and I sheeted up the boot, loaded with rubbish and threw a sheet over the top and sides so when going round corners it wouldn't rub and damage the interior... Don't know why i bothered because the car got filthy and I've got a couple of new scratch marks... It's not the end of the world, but we only have one car and (I know it's only an astra) i don't want this one getting ruined. So i thought about buying an old car to run around in and do the dirty jobs. In the last 3 years we've done renovated a property and are currently mid doing one now. So instead of paying for skips, why not get an old car. I also like buying old furniture and doing 'shabby chic' projects. So would be handy for collecting furniture. It's knowing what to buy. I thought about a pickup, but not sure if you're allowed in the tip with them. Then thought about an estate, and then considered an MPV for more height inside. Any recommendations? I only really want to spend £500-£600. Not bothered about condition as it's going to get ruined inside, just want something mechanically reliable as might only get used a few times a month.
Any ideas/suggestions?

This looks lovely.
Only 500 quid and it's in excellent condition with 2 keys , leather and nav and 11 months mot. Who cares if it gets trashed. Flog the rear seats on fleabay
Fairly low mileage at 112k too.

It is in the snotter thread, but I picked up a 2003 Passat PD130 SE estate, with the reliable 5 speed manual, optional cruise and Sport wheels, recent brakes, tyres, cambelt and clutch/DMF for £550 on eBay.

I use my old Land Rover for such duties. For sure, much more expensive to buy than current proposals, but no tax to pay, they effectively don't depreciate, and so all it costs you to have one around is the £100 a year to insure it and the requisite parking spot.

I stuck 3/4 of a ton of earth and rubble in mine to cart down the tip today.

Tow bar on the Astra and a utility trailer if the tip lets you in with them?

Toyota Previa with all the seats out. Will cost nearly nothing, and be pretty reliable. The sort of thing you can buy on eBay with some confidence that it's either working, or that it will be an easy repair.

I'm thinking about the later one with the engine in normal place (front), not the earlier one with the engine under the passenger seat (yes really).

At this price point I would definitely prefer an old Japanese car, to minimise bork potential.

This or the almost identical Peugeot Partner. Instead if getting a car and using it as a van get a van that you can use as a car. The multistage versions with Windows and seats are quite a bit cheaper, both to unsure and buy than the van versions.

I've still got a proper heavy duty van roof rack I had on mine you could have if you pick it up.
