Hey,

Looking for a new car for my sister and after some opinions on the Sandero/alternatives please. Price is the key factor here, the Sandero starts at £5995 which is the absolute top of her budget.

She wants something very cheap to run, low insurance, low tax, good mpg etc. She would be keeping the car for a very long time (her current fiesta has seen her through the last 13 years) and something small & basic is absolutely fine.

I understand the Sandero is the cheapest brand new car you can buy in the U.K. & it comes with a 3 year warranty. Has anyone had experience with this model? Are there alternatives for the same/less price that I am missing?

I don't particularly want to buy 2nd hand and run the risk of issues or the hassle of haggling with private sellers or dealers. Just want something reliable that will get her from A to B with no thrills.

Any input would be much appreciated.

I've been driving a Sandero Stepway diesel (so slightly up on the spec for your sister) for last three years, 58k miles covered, just sailed through the MOT. Great little car, just remember its based on old Clio running gear, cheap as chips to fix when warranty does run out (which can also be extended to 5 years / 100,000 miles).

The six grand version has no equipment at all - no radio, manual windows etc, so bear that in mind. However, if you want a new car for six grand it's the only option. In Europe you can get a Fiat Punto for similar money but I expect the Sandero is a better long term bet (and I doubt there are any cheap Puntos in the UK).

If you can go down a size then a Kia Picanto might slip into budget if you can find a basic ex-demo model, likewise the Peugeot 108 or Citroen C1.
